As a late career professional, by now you are a thought leader in your industry / sector which means you can now see where it is moving & what might be the next big opportunities in it. Choose one such opportunity to start your business. This shall have the following advantages: (1) You have right domain knowledge (2) You’re well connected with major stakeholders in the sector (3) You yourself have credibility in the market (4) You are knowledgeable to choose the right partners for your business (5) You can raise seed capital on your credibility. Once the business reaches a certain scale, you can take one of the following decisions: (1) Work full time (2) Continue working as a partner (3) Sell the business if you’re getting good returns

Reflect on your career to identify your strengths, passions, and areas of expertise. Consider business ideas that align with these elements, as they can lead to more fulfilling and successful ventures.

Before diving in, research the market to identify potential opportunities or niches that align with your interests and where your experience gives you a competitive edge. Understand the needs of your target customers and how your business can meet them.

Don't waste any time or money building something you THINK will work. First thing to do is to test it. Build a cheap, rapid prototype, something you're a bit embarrassed about but it works and gets the main features across. Show that to anyone and everyone, narrow it down to your customer base and get their feedback. Slowly build a list of feedback items and once you've validated the idea and tested it, then begin to build it. If you can get pre-orders before the build, even better!

Talk to your potential customers and try to shape an ICP of your ideal customer while you do that. Try to identify your extra customer’s extra pains and think about how could you address them. Don’t run a Stealth mode(it’s strange to me seeing people doing that), share as much as you can. If that’s a SaaS product - get it on the paper. Think about how your product can address particular pains of a specific process or industry and get an answer to the question, “Is someone willing to pay for that?”. While understanding the need and having a vision of both ICP and monetization - go for a prototype.

You can build a team with past colleagues, contractors, mentors, advisors, etc. on a salary, equity or volunteer (not the best approach) basis. You can find them online, on LinkedIn, Reddit, local networking events at startup incubators or co-working spaces, the world is your oyster. Main things to look out for: contrasting skillsets (you don't want to be good at the same thing) but sharing similar values (alignment on your high level approaches to things is important to a smooth partnership).

A common misconception is that successful entrepreneurs are mostly college dropouts. I’m not trying to say that being an older entrepreneur is better than being a young one, both are great and we know great examples of entrepreneurs of different ages. I’m trying to say that it’s just a stereotype that advancing age is a kind of bug in business, vice versa, I would say that it’s a big advantage.
