Although knowledge of civil engineering design is preferred on this position, I have found is not the most important skill required to assume this job. Having myself transitioned from a designer position to a leader role, I can definitely attest that communication, negotiation, and problem-solving are the most important skills in this position, since a lot of times, the leader will have to fight for resources within the organization, negotiate with peers and customers, and juggle the needs of a lot of departments. So, a good amount of stubbornness is required so that as a leader of the team, you can stand your ground on your engineering decisions, while also advocating for your team.
