What does a history specialist do?

A history specialist doesn't just study the past; they unlock the stories, secrets, and mysteries of our shared human journey. The main way of communication for academic historians are through monographs and journal articles (or essays in edited volumes). Monographs are especially important in allowing the historian to set forth his/her body of work in an in-depth fashion. The book will demonstrate the historian's main argument or interpretation and contributions (especially the main idea emerging from the book), as well as the craft of the historian in navigating and interpreting the archival sources.

Hopefully a history specialist will be well read and has visited the places they cover, not just read about it in a book. They should have books of their own to be called a specialist.

Historical research is nonetheless a valuable field and it trains you to also potentially enter into careers like law, criminal investigations or even medicine. Of course, one can also translate the skills to jobs which require a high-level of skill in navigating large amounts of sources with a critical eye, and the capacity to communicate findings from the sources with clarity and depth.
