I don't recommend functional resumes, especially if used to obscure gaps in employment because: - the tactic is a well known ploy and no longer works - as such, it is now seen as a red flag by employers - functional resumes don't convert easily into an employer's online application processing auto-fill tool - functional resumes do not parse well through many Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).

If an employer insists on prying into these periods, that could be a red flag that the employer does not respect boundaries regarding privacy or work-life balance.
