What are effective ways to record an interview when a guest is uncomfortable being recorded?

If you are limited on time to do a pre-recording screening, you can schedule your podcast recording time to be longer than you plan the episode to be. For example, if you want your episode to be 30-45 minutes, schedule an hour on your and your guest's calendar. You can also have automation set up to set clear expectations for the interview so your guest feels supported and comfortable. I like to start the discussion before hitting record by chatting through my plan for the conversation, that there will be editing done to the audio, and how long I'd like the conversation to go on for. This sets the expectation right away and leaves the guests feeling like they don't have to worry so much and can be themselves.

I agree that helping the guest understand the purpose and format of the podcast is imperative and to always send guests a detailed briefing document. However, I don't believe sharing questions is the best way to settle a nervous guest, as they will become so focused on what they will say when asked a certain question that any tangent will throw them and it won't sound natural. Instead, spend 5,10,15 minutes "green-rooming" them - just have a chat, ask them about their day, their family, their plans for the weekend and keep asking follow on questions. Show them it's a conversation with you and that you're interested in them, and get them used to talking before you hit record. Also - remind them it's not live and of the magic of editing!

Paraphrasing Responses: With permission, record the session for personal use, then paraphrase the guest's responses in your content, avoiding direct quotes or audio clips. Written Responses: Ask your guest to provide written responses to your questions, which you can then read aloud or summarize in your podcast. Anonymous Participation: Offer to anonymize your guest's participation by altering their voice in the recording or by not disclosing their identity.

🤝 To build rapport and trust with guests as a podcast host, it's crucial to avoid asking insulting or offensive questions. During an interview, your guest relies on you to shape the narrative of the show and strives to present their best selves while providing value to your listeners. I've witnessed many podcasters attempting to be clever by putting their guests in awkward situations. While you might "win" that particular conversation, it's unlikely the guest will return to your show or recommend you to others, as you will have lost their respect. Therefore, it's essential to ensure your guest feels confident that you won't do anything to jeopardize their reputation during the interview. This is a crucial step in interview preparation.

If you appear rattled, your guest will catch it. If there's an issue with sound mid-interview allow your guest to finish their thought before letting them know you just need to make some adjustments before having another go at the last question. An interruption is a mood killer.
