What are the main benefits and challenges of NoC compared to SoC in VLSI?

Network-on-Chip (NoC) and System-on-Chip (SoC) are pivotal in VLSI Benefits of NoC:- (a) Scalability - Eases integration of numerous components, accommodating complex systems. (b) Performance - Enhances data communication speed across various cores, improving overall efficiency. (c) Modularity - Facilitates design reuse, reducing development time & costs. Challenges of NoC:- (a) Complexity - Requires sophisticated design strategies & tools, potentially escalating initial costs. (b) Power Consumption - Higher performance may lead to increased power demand, necessitating efficient design solutions.

A System on Chip (SoC) integrates key components like the CPU, GPU, memory, and I/O interfaces into a single chip, optimizing power, size, and cost. SoCs offer better power efficiency, size reduction, and improved performance, making them ideal for smartphones, wearables, IoT, and automotive applications. The term NOC - Network on chip was formulated by William Dally. A Network on chip effectively acts as a 2D interconnect. Typically NOCs split a data packet into much smaller chunks known as flits. To communicate between two nodes of a NOC first a head flit is transmitted The head flit is followed by a number of data flit and can be terminated by a tail flit. The advantage is a store and forward approach to NOC data transfer is not required. The head flit and data flits can transmitted without much interval. NOCs allows more than one flits to be "in flight" at the same time. NOCs have congestion control e.g. a back pressure signal originating in the receiver. Backpressure signal informs the traffic source to delay transmission.

Large SOCs are built around NOC structures. NOCs are there for rapid data transfer between blocks with minimal congestion with added advantage of on the fly reconfigurability - esp. in an eFPGA. Once a NOC is designed its bitwidth, latency, fault tolerance level is set. NOCs can be designed with redundant paths to form a graph. If one edge is broken the NOC can reconfigure itself and no loss of traffic occurs. This is a advantage of NOC. NOC can be split into regions with common clock with Synchronization FIFOS added in between its termed a GALS- Global Asynchronous Locally Synchronous NOC. Control signals in NOC are usually doubled buffered with the receiving clock.

Anything and everything cutting edge comes with challenges, one of them is verifying the NoC, Since NoC's are a networking web, it's very complex to verify their functionality and reliability of data integrity and coherence of the data.

NOCs are on chip support. With the arrival of two Chiplet standards NOCs are called upon to do even more complex tasks. The NOCs must communicate via external interfaces to other chips in the same package - standards are "UCIe1.0" and "Bundle of wires". The transition to 2.5D implies there are multiple dies each with their own NOC. In such cases a asynchronous protocol must be there to communicate between two Chiplets made in different processes but communicating via an Interface like UCIe. Optical package level networks will go a long way to sustain > 1 Terabit/second communication between two Chiplets having internal NOCs.
