What are the most common leadership development needs for non-profit leaders?

I personally find 'vision' and 'mission' to be too ill-defined to be useful in strategy. Instead, start by clearly articulating their core purpose, then choosing a limited number of impact areas that they want to prioritize within the scope of that purpose - the more focused, the better. Next, you need to understand the scale of each priority - which is the scope and complexity of what you want to achieve. This helps you identify the reach and depth required by your programs or services. At this point, you can choose a strategy that aligns with the scale of your priorities and will help you advance your impact priorities in your current/emerging context. Purpose -> Priorities -> Scale -> Strategy -> Activities

As a governance consultant, I find that when it comes to NFP governance, everyone is a beginner. I use governance reform as a 'teaching moment' and it is usually appreciated.

Vision drives the organisation; motivates team and stakeholders to contribute to actionable points linked to strategy. However, in the changing fund raising scenario, at times, non profits find it difficult to pursue vision and related strategies. At times, there is a struggle of thoughts, for pursuing vision in long term; and continuity of activities and team of people in medium term.

Without collaboration and influence, the very best leader will be hard-pressed to build meaningful change in any organization and especially those organizations which suffer from toxic cultures. The ability to influence - independent of title or rank - is what sets true leadership apart from those who work from hierarchical places of assumed power. Further, building consensus through a collaborative approach, ensures that change and initiatives are met with longer and more lasting success, because the team owns the work product or process.

True , Collaboration is the key for everything what we do; But the challenge is everyone focused on delivering their strategies through their programmes/Projects. But it is important at the leadership level mindset change/shift required, how collaborations can help in improving the efficiency, reducing the time and cost, delivering better results and outcomes in shorter duration. All the ecosystem player more philanthropic players also need to insist and important of collaboration in all their funding to be recommended. These kind of pushes might help to see more collaborations. We learn and feel importance of collaboration when we are stuck such as like during COVID 19. But should happen naturally and we value it.

Partnerships are crucial in the nonprofit world. Finding like-minded organizations that share your mission and can advocate for your cause is vital. Nonprofit management requires not only logistical skills but also the ability to be a good partner. Don't underestimate the power of a Zoom or phone call. Even when resources are limited, supporting other nonprofits is worthwhile. By doing so, you can build strong relationships and foster a spirit of collaboration, which will enable you to ask for their support in the future.

Fundraising is one of the key skills of a Non Profit leader. However, in the changing scenario, fundraising has become more professional, varied; with requirement documentation and communication skills. This is one of the capacity building and development needs of Non Profit Leaders.

Non-profit leaders often work in complex and dynamic environments that require collaboration and influence across multiple sectors and levels. They need to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders, such as government agencies, foundations, corporations, media, community groups, and other non-profits. They also need to be able to persuade and inspire others to support their cause, share their resources, and join their efforts. To develop these skills, non-profit leaders need to cultivate trust, empathy, listening, and negotiation abilities. They also need to be aware of their own and others' styles, preferences, and motivations.

As a non-profit need to be agile and thinking ahead always, if not then sooner will become redundant. But this is becoming challenge due to various factors, largely resource available to attract right talents, try the innovations and building the capabilities of the non profits team is lacking. In this context Non profit not able to being agile and carry out innovations. There are many non profits who were pioneering once up on a time, now they are becoming a invisible and struggling to attract right talents to be relevant in the sector.

Leading in the non-profit sector can be demanding emotionally and mentally. Building resilience, practising self-care, and managing stress are critical for sustained leadership effectiveness. Non-profit leaders often juggle multiple responsibilities, tight budgets, and the emotional weight of their cause. Learning effective stress management techniques, such as mindfulness can help maintain mental well-being. Taking breaks and restorative time is essential. Leaders should embrace downtime, whether through short breaks during work hours or taking planned vacations, to recharge and prevent burnout. Non-profit leaders must engage and collaborate effectively with their boards to achieve organisational objectives.

Non-profit leaders who embrace adaptability and innovation can respond to shifting needs, identify new opportunities, and ensure their organizations remain resilient and forward-thinking in pursuit of their missions.

Adaptability & Innovation are a must-have for non-profit leaders closely followed by & linked to self-awareness & development. We are called upon to multi-task within many diverse environments. The non-profit space is VUCA - Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Uncertain - constant adaptability & innovation are required. This however, is only possible when leaders are self-aware & focus on development to manage their time, skills & most importantly mindset & bandwidth. A relevant example: Non-profit leaders today need to find the time step away from the day-to-day, to learn AI which could help them better manage & streamline their processes. This could lead to breakthrough transformation for themselves and their organization.

It takes incredible emotional capacity to begin to have these conversations with a goal of cultivating understanding vs. defending traditional structures. No one likes to think of themselves as capable of gaps in awareness but we all have them. Leaders must be nurtured to know their gaps and empower their teams to actively point out and challenge their personal perspective. It takes something we can’t teach, we can only asses the capacity for it and nurture its growth. It’s solid self-worth and willingness to manage with grace the discomfort that comes with awareness of your own power and privilege. Leadership is a group project and should be treated as such, regardless of titles and hierarchy.

Diversity and inclusion are important to me, especially because I have a child with autism. In a non-profit setting, I believe it's crucial to create an inclusive environment where individuals with unique needs, like my child, feel valued and can fully participate. This not only fosters acceptance and understanding but also leads to more effective programs and a stronger, more connected community. In general and based on my experience needs to be looked at leadership rotation as mandatory and professionally managing is very important. The leadership position is not an permanent position, this need to be understood by the leaders and open for new leadership. These will help as well non profits to be more agile, innovative and provides a space to attract new talents and donors.

Another point to consider is that to be successful, non-profit leaders must transcend thinking from the perspective of a frontline staff person. Obvious, right? Not always? Some non-profit leaders (not as many today as in the past) may have started their careers as a frontline worker. What I’ve seen happen numerous times is as the frontline worker elevates through the same organization or a different organization, they may find it challenging to separate their strategic thinking from over-identifying with their former role as a frontline worker. I’m not pretending that’s easy because it is not but it must be done. Successful nonprofit leaders who were formerly frontline workers understand and embrace this principle.

An area that many nonprofit leaders fail to recognize, is that it must be run as a business. Although the goal is not generating profits for shareholders, for the entity to survive it must be successful and the simple equation of more capital needs to come in versus what goes out absolutely needs to be recognized. Otherwise, the nonprofit will eventually fail.

An aspect of leadership we all too often fail to discuss is the need for a break. Particularly in small nonprofits the job of leader is all-consuming and exhausting. So, to prevent getting into a rut and just implementing the same techniques and ideas over and over and to prevent complete burnout, we need to give our leaders time. Give them a vacation. Offer a short-term sabbatical when a board director, or someone else, steps in and assumes leadership for a month.

The art of balancing, dealing with dilemmas, managing uncertainty, the ability to counter your own narrative and collaborating with the "other" are critical skills for non-profit leadership and are a gap in most of the leadership learning programs.
