Crisis management is a litmus test for PR professionals, which requires to maintain a fine balance between taking immediate action and avoiding knee-jerk reaction. While one can never be fully prepared or predict a crisis, it is prudent to keep track of what is happening in the outer and inner ecosystem of the brand, which can lead to a potential crisis. OODA (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act), developed by military strategist John Boyd, is an effective approach during PR crisis situations. Assess the situation, predict multiple scenarios, map out the potential steps against each of the scenarios, pre-empt outcomes, decide the course of action and execute, analyze the situation as it evolves and improvise the strategy accordingly.

Safeguarding a brand's reputation during a crisis is a paramount challenge that truly requires the need for strategic finesse and creative problem-solving skills. Whether it's responding to a sudden PR crisis, managing negative publicity, or addressing unforeseen issues, effective crisis management demands a well-prepared and proactive approach. Crafting a coherent crisis communication strategy, responding swiftly and transparently, and aligning messaging with organizational values are crucial aspects. Successfully navigating these crisis moments not only preserves the brand's integrity but also presents an opportunity for growth and resilience in the face of adversity.

Crisis management, or crisis PR, is a facet of public relations that requires the most skill to craft a strategy for. That’s because you’re already in the middle of a catastrophe, so you need to take extra effort to identify and avoid any potential missteps that could further damage your brand. The first step is to determine if it’s best to issue a response or just or to try waiting it out. The next step, if a response is best, is to strategize a plan so that you don’t act on impulse. That’s a recipe for disaster. You’ll craft your messaging to either drown out the negative with overwhelming positive publicity, or take full accountability with an apology tour. Finally, you’ll execute your plan. Speed is of the essence here.

In PR, many common challenges demand strategic thinking. First, managing crises effectively is paramount. PR professionals must prepare for unexpected situations and develop crisis communication plans to maintain a positive brand image during difficult times. Second, navigating the digital landscape is essential. Third, targeting the right audience is crucial, as PR efforts should resonate with the intended demographics. Lastly, maintaining transparency and authenticity in an age of skepticism is challenging but vital for building trust. Overcoming these challenges requires creative and strategic PR solutions that adapt to the evolving media landscape.

Crisis mitigation is more important than crisis management. This requires foreseeing all problem areas and taking corrective measures in advance. Why wait for the external audience to point out the problems? This requires awareness of the problems, maturity to accept they exist and strength to take prompt action. Strategic thinking is required at each stage of this journey. Even after taking the required crisis mitigation actions, a crisis can erupt at some point in the corporate journey. At that point, it is critical to bring all the thinking minds together to find possible solutions. The leaders have to think about strategically engaging with the affected people in a positive environment. Leaders should be seen as solution providers.

It takes years to build a reputation, but minutes to lose it. Credibility is something you have to constantly build in the market and remember how easily you can lose it. This can be in the form of CX, a stakeholder sending out the wrong message on official channels etc. The end user can spot originality and honesty, in your products and your messaging and will remember you for it. Always strive to build better.

Counter crisis with positive stories. Top rule of the game is to overpower the negative conversation with positive developments. Timing and choice of communication are of importance. The right message at the right time can help overcome the crisis in a smart and effective manner depending on the intensity of the crisis.

My concern here comes off especially when it comes to celebrating successes and achievements, which can actually bolster reputation, but it's a double-edged sword. Overemphasis can come across as bragging or insincerity, and underplaying them can result in missed opportunities to enhance reputation. Similarly, highlighting social responsibility is crucial in today's climate, but it must be genuine. "Greenwashing" or overstating one's contributions can backfire spectacularly.

Awards and recognition are essential tools in reputation management and raising awareness for both organizations and individuals. These honors can validate achievements and contributions in specific industries or specialties, boosting credibility and visibility. They serve as symbols of excellence, signaling trustworthiness and respect. Moreover, awards can act as powerful marketing tools, setting recipients apart from competitors and building positive reputations. In today's trust-driven world, leveraging accolades is a strategic asset for establishing and maintaining a favorable reputation and increasing awareness of one's accomplishments.

Mapping your GTM strategy with your comms strategy is key for brand awareness and reputation building. As first steps, work with your comms team on the following: •Outline the problems you solve for your customers •Create your points of view, including on current trends and how you fit or don’t •Monitor how you show up in the world on many platforms from your site, social to media Continually revisit and refine the above and layout quarterly objectives then adjust your comms plan accordingly.

Remember that media relations is about building relationships. You cannot expect to land media pitches through cold emails, to sources unfamiliar with you or your company. Start developing relationships with writers who specialize in your area, are in your target markets and write about your competition. Get to understand what their care about and tailor pitches to their specific styles, an "email blast" will not be effective. Focus on curated messaging. Remember relationships are a two-way street, you can't just expect writers to cover you because you have "news"

Strategic thinking is a must in the PR world, especially when tackling media relations. The media landscape is ever-changing, and it's not enough to just send out press releases and hope for the best. You've got to know the journalists and outlets that matter to your audience and what they're looking to cover. Building a genuine relationship with them requires more than a great pitch; it requires follow-through, listening, and adapting your approach based on their feedback.

In truth, every element of PR should be approached with a strategic mindset. But the elements that occur every single day, like media relations, need special attention. Media relations are the voicebox of the company and the lifeblood of the account. Without success here, you have nothing. Here's how I think about it: 1. Identify your end goal. Who are you trying to reach, what you are trying to say, and what you want them to hear. 2. Determine the absolute best person to help you tell that story. Figure out what your audience is reading and back into the publication through reporter research 3. Frame your news for this reporter and this reporter only. Why would X reporter at Y publication care, and why now.

Les médias sont des partenaires importants dans les relations publiques. Il faut savoir tirer profit des contacts médias, ne pas les rendre incontournables non plus parfois. Ils sont importants à certains moments, d'autres non. La gestion des relations médias peut être complexe, s'il n'y a pas la maîtrise des finalités relationnelles. There’s the concern of whether there’s true value for money and whether the selected media contacts will give enough coverage as desired. There’s also the question of what’s in it for them, whether the story or content is sensational enough for them to also get value from carrying the story. Often, writing our own press release and sharing it with the selected media houses can help control the narrative. Consistent follow up and long lasting relations can also prove helpful.

This will ensure high level of engagements with the target audience. The biggest mistake is to create content that is focused on selling a product. Focusing on building brand awareness Vs selling the brand or product is critical. People don’t buy products they buy “feelings”- feeling of security, feeling of luxury, feeling of confidence, feeling of comfort…it’s crucial to focus on Building a brand’s reputation around how it makes them FEEL.

Good content creation requires planning well in advance. For me, I have realized how helpful having a consistent content calendar has been. It helps me identify beforehand what gaps need to be filled and then work with my team ahead of time to develop the needed content. The space your business is in can help shape the content direction. For instance an Investment promotion agency can develop a lot of content around trade, commerce, investment, finance, destination information, and so on. It also helps to understand how each platform works to determine how to tailor or package each content. For example, what works well with on Instagram may not work as well in LinkedIn, and so on.

Even for the same event, the content needs to be adjusted based on which forms it is distributed in. For example, the content created for a press release and social media will be in completely different tones and formats. The other thing is to ensure the brand values are consistent throughout all your content, so people can remember your company's key values.

The opportunity for public relations lies in identifying key stakeholders and their interests/concerns. In management, this includes providing counsel on risks and opportunities with each stakeholder group. This highlights where relationships may need investment. Tactics can include creating stakeholder groups to get input and feedback on organisational policies and practices. This fosters meaningful two-way dialogue and builds trust.

Effective stakeholder engagement, whether internal or external, is critical to achieving your PR/communications objectives in any project. While some may think it's easy, it's not. I firmly believe that a PR team within an organization has one of the broadest sets of stakeholders to manage. This includes employees, executives, the CEO, the media, content creators, key opinion leaders, activists, NGOs and more. Each has different needs, goals, business relevance, and priorities. Careful planning and execution to align their expectations and concerns with our PR/communications and business objectives is a critical step.

I absolutely agree… LISTENING to their perspective, goals, expectations and concerns and then work collaboratively to achieve the common goals to build the trust. How often have we jumped to conclusions and stuck to our opinions (or assumptions) without entertaining the possibility that the other stakeholder may also have a valid point?   We are so preoccupied that we don't listen. We may hear the words but don't devote time to understanding the sentiments, underlying emotions, and unspoken narratives.

The key is recognising what motivates these diverse stakeholder groups and aligning the organisation's communication strategies with their specific objectives. A well-executed stakeholder management plan can significantly contribute to the company's reputation and overall business success.

The role for public relations practitioners in management lies in raising ethical concerns and considerations when relevant, even if it challenges management's preferences. Practitioners should outline the risks to reputation and public trust if actions could be perceived as unethical. This speaks to management's interests in reputation and legitimacy. Recommend ethical frameworks, values statements, or codes of conduct that can guide organisational behaviour and culture. Suggest involving third-party ethics experts, advisory councils, or other outside perspectives to review policies and decisions.

A sixth common PR challenge is managing ethical dilemmas that arise from conflicting values, interests, or obligations. PR professionals must navigate situations without clear right or wrong answers, such as whether to disclose sensitive information or handle misinformation. They need to apply ethical principles like honesty, accuracy, fairness, respect, and social responsibility, and consult with peers, mentors, or experts to make and justify their decisions.

Several challenges/ factors haven't been put into play here. Things like global perceptive, technology advancements, budget constraints, government relations, ethical dilemmas and target audience diversity.

Several external factors can drive public relations activity up the management agenda towards strategic activity. This includes regulation, organisational complexity, and the need to build credibility within a market. Five situations typically lead to the expertise of public relations practitioners being sought by management. 1. Organisational crisis - reputational issue 2. Ethical dilemma - issue related to culture or values 3. Credibility over time - an earned role as an advisor 4. Issues on the media agenda - issues subject to media scrutiny 5. Leadership - support for leaders in the public sphere

PR, as most professionals will vouch for, has innate challenges ranging from Crisis Management to Reputation Building to simply maintaining a consistently relevant presence in the media. One particular challenge that I feel deserves highly strategic thinking is communicating across diverse social and cultural regions. Most of the time I have noticed that translating the language of your communication to match the region is the only strategic thought that's applied. However, I believe tweaking the communication itself to address the varying needs and demands of your TG is paramount and thus, proves most effective.

Measuring ROI is one that we cannot ignore: Proving the value of PR efforts can be challenging. Strategic thinking involves setting clear, measurable objectives and selecting the right metrics to track progress. This way, you can showcase the impact of PR on your organization's or company's goals.
