In my opinion, a DBA has two jobs. 1. Backup the database and ship the backup files to a location other than where the database itself is. 2. Test that the backups can be used to restore. Wilson suggests "These days the hosting providers got that covered". No, you still need to make sure you can fulfill your SLA with your users. If you should take only FULL backups, or combine FULL, DIFF and LOG backups comes down to the SLA you have to fulfill. And that's what you need to test regularly. How much data may be lost in case of a disaster, and how fast must the database be online again. It's not a paper product, it's a drill you have to go through often. Practice, review and adjust.

This should be the most common and linked to your DR Strategy. If, maybe not the most important (for performance) but it is the most critical and should be the most common daily task, to check and verify. This is your life Insurance.

I’ve faced too many performance issues where the main reason was index fragmentation. Some companies don’t have a DBA role and create their environment the best they can but don’t analyze how frequent the maintenance must run! There is no one rule for all! You need to rebuild or reorg your indexes accordingly to your needs. Sometimes it will run just on the weekends, sometimes on daily basis, sometimes just few tables, sometimes entire database! Keep watching your environment! Take fragmentations reports and define your strategy! It will be helpful!

Being an application developer you know more about the integrity of data. However administrators mostly focus on the administrative jobs. I believe Integrity check is a shared responsibility.

To help keep your server running smoothly you want to monitor the resource usage, and where possible reduce the resources required by queries being run. Checking wait stats on the server will give a good indication of what’s slowing down the databases. From here you can then look at problems with you plan cache, making sure procedures make use of parameters and are SARGable will help the system use plans from the cache rather than have to recompile each time it’s run, and make use of indexes for example which in turn will reduce resource usage. Also checking the parallelism settings (such as max DOP) on the server is important as the defaults may not be right for the queries running on your server making it run inefficiently.

Collect Data, generate reports, monitor your environment closely, check the numbers, and the metrics, and then, MAYBE, you will have the best settings for your servers. As much as possible, steer away from FK and embrace the overhead of maintaining table relationships by hand. It will improve your ability to restore them elsewhere avoiding AI conflicts or worse: having to re-link hundreds of thousands of records after (a way too late discovery of) a mishap!
