What are the most effective methods for selecting features in model building?

Another method that I feel is not talked about enough is the Boruta algorithm. Having too many features can potentially harm a machine-learning model especially if some of these features are irrelevant to the model. Important topic to have a very intense discussion so I first congratulate on bringing this topic up. Since I didn’t see feature selection, I am going to highlight my views under this subject. For me, I feel feature selection has been the most effective in my experience. Methods like Pearson correlation matrix is extremely beneficial in selecting the right feature for your model. With this we can eliminate the feature which are “identical” in nature, I.e., features with high correlation can be put aside. Thus reducing the number of features. This helps in keeping the continuity of the EDA that we perform and keeps the development in rhythm and has worked extremely well for me.

Indeed feature engineering is a very very crucial and effective method while we implement models. Selecting relevant features that contribute to the predictive model. However, in my work experience, raw data contains many irrelevant or redundant features that can face noise of the model, overfitting, or reduced generalization. And also by using feature engineering, we can create new features or transform existing ones to better capture non-linear relationships or complex patterns in the data. From my perspective, this is especially important when dealing with real-world datasets where the relationship between features and the target variable may not be straightforward.

In a scenario where your number of candidate features are not way too high, you are also advised to compare same model with additional features using ANOVA to see which model performs better.

One thing I have found helpful is Random forest. For example- In a Random Forest model for predicting house prices, features like 'Square Footage' and 'Location' are evaluated for their importance based on their ability to reduce impurity in decision-making. This reduction is averaged across all trees in the forest. Features that consistently lower impurity, like 'Square Footage', gain higher importance scores, indicating a strong impact on house price predictions.
