What is the most effective way to explain Machine Learning?

When you raise a child, especially in the early years, kids somehow start talking. They hear and see how adults do that, then somehow start repeating and doing it themselves. We do not explicitly teach them rules of language, rather exhibit lots of examples. Same goes for machine learning: you provide a set of examples, apply certain algorithms and at the output you have an intelligent system that makes predictions.

Imagine your understanding of hippos (the model) is based only on Disney cartoons (the data), where they're shown as dancing, friendly animals. This perception could be severely challenged if you visit Africa, where hippos are known to be one of the most dangerous and aggressive animals, responsible for the deaths of many people. This is a key point in machine learning: how training data affects a model's accuracy. If a machine learning model is trained on limited or biased data (such as only cartoon hippos), it can lead to flawed assumptions or decisions when applied to real-world scenarios (like encountering actual hippos). For a model to be effective, it needs diverse and accurate training data.

Suppose you want to teach your child about dogs and cat. You show the picture of the dog or cat and say “This is the dog” or “This is the cat”. You are teaching your child by showing examples that this is what cats and dogs are. After seeing several examples, your child will learn how to identify dogs and cats. Now you can show your child a picture of any dog or cat and it’s able to tell you whether the picture is of dog or cat. Now, consider replacing the child with a machine. This process is known as machine learning.

Typically, most non-technical people don't actually want to learn how ML "works". Rather, they just want to know what's being used to make decisions. I.e. they want to know what data is being used as input. So giving them an example of how/why a model makes a decision tends to be the most effective, in my experience.

Imagine you have a little robot friend who loves guessing games. At first, you show it pictures of fruits and tell it what each fruit is. The robot learns by guessing and checking if it got it right. Over time, it learns to recognize fruits on its own! Just like when you learn to spot a cat or a dog, the robot learns from examples. That's a bit like how machines learn from lots of examples too, but instead of cats and dogs, they learn to recognize all sorts of things, like fruits, cars, or even emotions on faces!

I recently had to explain to the leadership at my company what "MLOps" means. They had basic understanding of AI. This is how I did it, keeping it as simple as possible: 1. Data science & ML algorithms are nothing but lines of code. 2. These lines of code give us future predictions, that enable us to make better business decisions. 3. The code is written in notebooks and a bunch of notebooks are required to get the job done from start to finish. 4. MLOps is the process that ties all these notebooks together via automated pipelines so that the end to end solution is reliable, replicable and scalable. It worked!

While machine learning can offer incredible benefits, it's important to acknowledge its limitations and challenges to maintain a realistic perspective. One significant limitation is the dependency on data quality and quantity. Machine learning algorithms are only as good as the data they're trained on. If the data is noisy, incomplete, or inaccurate, the model's predictions could be flawed, much like how building on a shaky foundation can compromise a house's integrity. Another issue is bias. Machine learning systems can inadvertently perpetuate and even amplify human biases if the data they're trained on reflects those biases.

To make machine learning more accessible, involve your audience directly. Ask them to identify where they've encountered machine learning in their daily routines, like in web searches or movie recommendations. Encourage them to suggest real-world problems machine learning could tackle, giving them a stake in the conversation. It's important to come up with relatable real-world examples. For example, can you predict a person's age based on their height? In this example there is intuitively a (non linear) relation between the two variables. But there are also many exceptions to the relationship between height and age; this helps us think about the limitations of machine learning.

It's worth considering *why* you're explaining machine learning to someone. Are they just curious? Are they considering entering into the field? Are they considering buying a solution? Are they trying to create policy? Focus on the needs of the audience not your own expertise.
