It is hard to think about any module that would not affect the rest of the system, at least minimally. A qualifier word is needed, such as "without significantly affecting the system". Or "with a limited effect in the system, so that the rework required in the rest of the system is reasonably manageable when the modules change" This is the section I was talking about. "Each module has a well-defined function and interface, and can be easily added, removed, or replaced without affecting the rest of the system."

Having a clear strategic roadmap laid out up front is important. That allows you to think ahead of time about potential future changes in one or more parts of the system, in order to design the system in a way that provides for the flexibility to accept those future changes without having.to redesign the core. "Look ahead (for potential future changes) and reason back (to include flexibility in the current design)" A clear data strategy is important. Defining the data model in a global way that allows for the addition of new scopes (geographical, business segment, etc.) that can be contained by the original global design, as opposed to having to add inconsistent layers of data later (which would undermine scalability of controls, reports)
