I would always advise to maintain a separate system on which to test the patching first, especially in an enterprise environment. This is mainly to ensure that all your deployed applications and current Windows settings operate as expected.

If it is client-type OS, then it's OK to user Windows Update and patch manually. But if it is server type, with best practice not to expose it to internet, WSUS or other centralized patching solution is a must.

If you are considering a manual process to patch systems, please considering using WSUS instead. While it is not a fully automated solution it will help provide more consistent patching, a level of control over the patches you install, and basic reporting on the status of your environment. WSUS is included with Windows Server so there are no additional costs to implement it.
