What are the most effective ways to build relationships with peers as a leader?

* Begin by asking yourself "Why should they collaborate with you? What's in it for them?" * Listen attentively to understand their priorities and identify a shared goal by linking at least one of their priorities with one of yours. *Show that you care about their objectives and success before moving to the technical aspects of the conversation. * Strategically decide when to extend support beyond your scope to build a foundation for seeking a reciprocal exchange when the right moment comes.

Relationship building starts by being genuine. Often times there can be competition between peers, which is just a fictitious story conjured by our minds! We are all human beings just trying to do our best. See your peers as your pals! If you see them as competition, you're in a place of scarcity, which only takes away your power. Choose an abundance mindset. What if they were your allies? What if you looked at them as nice people? What if you saw them as your support network? Things would look very different. And the best part is, when you stop working against each other and start working with each other, that's when the magic happens :)

One of the best ways to become one amongst equals in your peer network is to appreciate their achievements and efforts. This is an often underused method to build more trusting and strategic peer relationships. Acknowledging your peers also genuinely makes you appreciate the constraints under which they work, and the unique challenges of their team and business goals.

Wertschöpfung kommt nach Wertschätzung! Die ehrliche Wertschätzung und Lob ist aus meiner Erfahrung in Deutschland noch stark ausbaufähig. Aber bietet deshalb auch eine Riesenchance, da es (leider) noch auffällt, wenn man ehrlich und wertschätzend lobt. Auf jeden Fall bekommt man ein Lächeln zurück und das macht den Tag besser ;-)

Often, when peers get together for a coffee at work, an energetic discussion of problems and issues they face in the organisation or with senior management is not far behind. While acknowledging problems is useful, over-discussing them is not. A better use of your peer network might be to ask how is the other person getting around that difficult situation? Or handling the upcoming changes with their team? Even better is to occasionally ask your peers - do they have feedback for you that you could work on as a fellow-leader in the team?

Feedback ist das Frühstück der Champions! Diese Aussage begleitet mich nun schon fast 25 Jahre. Ich musste und durfte lernen, dass aktives und konstruktives Feedbacken erlernt werden muss/kann. Wer diese Skills erlernt, kommt aus meiner Erfahrung im Berufsleben richtig weit.

This should be step 1 for new leaders- asking your peers about their position and how your new position can best support them. Hopefully your peers will reciprocate that and ask how they can best support you.
