What are the most effective ways to design a literature curriculum?

While teaching Literature has so many creative avenues, it's important as an effective teacher to identify your overarching goals for the entire course first. This ensures that all your activities are meaningful and purposeful. I like to write my goals in three ways: 1. What do I want to see in my students at the end of the course? 2. What will my students be able to say about what they have learned at the end of the course? 3. What is the essential question we will be answering? This process can then be broken down into smaller pieces to coincide with the different units/texts being studied. Once you have planned the course's scope and sequence, you can begin selecting the literature you will teach for each unit.
