What are the most effective ways to incentivize partner performance?

From a bonus standpoint, to incentivize a partner performance can only be rewarded in cash or in equity. However, the evaluation of the partner's performance can be based on multiple factors such as the corporate valuation increase, reaching specific milestones of corporate construction, and obtaining specific competitive advantages through alliances or exclusivities. What matters is to define it BEFORE and once again, the general action plan is a key element of the business plan in the matter of partners' compensation too.

For bonus payouts or equity milestones based on targets, clear and measurable SMART goals are super important. That way everyone knows what they are working towards with no gray area. Communication and transparency is key here. One other thing to consider performance and job satisfaction is not 100% tied to monetary compensation and there may be other things (ie flexibility with time, ability to be home for that sons baseball game, or daughters gymnastics competition) that will rejuvenate the partners drive as well.

Most partner performance incentives suck because you give what they don’t want. Really. Money, Training, Technology , joint products , geographies , product range etc etc ; your partner may be keen to lean towards one of them while you are bent upon giving more money. Consider OEMs of automobiles. Financial incentives hardly work for them anymore. They are themselves millionaires. Consider your distributor in a small state keen to work in larger geography; how does more money help him ? You need to get in to a dialogue with partners and understand their aspirations.
