3 Memory sharing

Memory sharing is the technique that allows multiple processes to access the same memory region, either for communication or for efficiency. Memory sharing can reduce the memory usage and the overhead of copying data between processes. Memory sharing can be implemented by using shared memory segments, memory mapping, or copy-on-write. Shared memory segments are memory regions that are explicitly created and attached by processes. Memory mapping is the method of mapping a file or a device to a memory region, so that processes can read or write to it as if it were memory. Copy-on-write is the strategy of copying a memory region only when a process tries to modify it, otherwise sharing it with other processes.

4 Memory swapping

Memory swapping is the technique of moving processes or pages between the main memory and the secondary storage, such as a disk. Memory swapping is used to free up memory space when the demand exceeds the supply, or to improve the locality of reference by bringing frequently used pages closer to the processor. 6 Memory garbage collection

Memory garbage collection can be performed by using algorithms such as mark and sweep, reference counting, or generational collection.
