Once you have chosen the method of your energy audit, you need to collect and analyze the data that will help you understand your energy consumption and performance. You should gather information from utility bills, building characteristics, energy systems, and energy consumption and performance sources. Utility bills provide data on monthly and annual energy consumption and costs, as well as peak demand and load factor. Building characteristics include information on size, shape, layout, orientation, age, construction, insulation, windows, doors, roof of your building as well as occupancy, schedule, and activities of your business. Energy systems data includes type, capacity, efficiency, condition, maintenance, and controls of lighting, heating, cooling, ventilation, water heating, refrigeration and other energy-using equipment and appliances. Energy consumption and performance data includes actual energy consumption and performance of your building and its systems measured by tools such as meters, sensors thermographs and software. Additionally you should collect information on indoor/outdoor temperature/humidity/air quality/comfort levels. After collecting the data you should use tools such as spreadsheets/graphs/charts/software to organize/visualize/interpret it. You should also compare your data with benchmarks/standards/best practices in your industry/region to identify patterns/trends/anomalies/opportunities for improvement.
