What are the pros and cons of using fiber optic sensors?

1 How fiber optic sensors work

Since we already have fiber in the ground, it would seem that we need to do external sensors to be placed on the ends that have region sites as needed. If you start building fiber with a sensors built-in, that would also work, but it doesn’t take advantage of all of the infrastructure already across the country.we need to standardize both models so that they can communicate with each other and work together. We just need a big player to come in and drive the direction.

I’m really intrigued by these fiber optic network sensors. If we could truly standardize the equipment, then we could save our industry, power companies, and so forth billions of dollars on infrastructure repairs. I’m even more fascinated by the concept that the sensors could work across the bridge to determine if the bridge is weakening so that we could prevent catastrophic failure of the bridge. I can think of so many reasons these sensors could be incredibly valuable. We already have so many thousands of miles of fiber in the ground, and it is traversing bridges and highways, and being built every day. Any kind of sensor that could prevent billions of dollars of damages a game changer in my opinion.

3 Challenges of fiber optic sensors

Despite their advantages, fiber optic sensors also face some challenges that limit their widespread adoption and use. For example, they tend to be more expensive than other types of sensors, especially for large-scale or mass-produced applications.

Additionally, fiber optic sensors are fragile and require careful handling and maintenance. They're not compatible with some existing systems or protocols that use electrical or optical signals and may require special connectors, adapters, or converters to interface with other devices or networks.

Finally, there is a lack of standardization and regulation for fiber optic sensors, which can cause inconsistency and confusion among users and manufacturers.

I feel standardize product especially within the fiberoptic sensor world is the only way we will ever have it move to the top for viable options. Otherwise you will have fly by night companies making inferior products and tech trying to guess at what they may encounter ón maintenance jobs.Standardization is not only a must but the only way to move up in this competitive world we live in.

There’s no question that we need to have somebody standardize the product so that we can make the systems work together. Maybe that needs to be done on the federal level if the companies can’t come together and standardize. We need to see who the emerging leader is in this technology and, follow suit.
