As a technical professional, the support of manager at each and every step is the key towards the success of whole team. Giving engineers their space and not micro-managing them builds a health relationship professionally as well as personally. Mutual respect and understanding between them is a critical factor as well failure of which effects the work directly. The goals nd KPIs should be discussed in team meetings with the encouraging atmosphere rather pointing out failures

We can evaluate the manager's performance on specific points like:- 1. Communication skills. 2. Reachable. 3. Accountability. 4. Responsible. 5. Proactive. 6. Honesty. The list goes on but the most important thing for me is the Honesty.

I will put it simply in this acronyms, SMART 1. S-set the team performance standard with realistic goals 2. M-manage the yearly and quarterly schedule, ie what to be achieve in Q1? 3. A-act decisively in giving ideas, intervention, doing root cause analysis and open to criticism 4. R-reflect and rectifying all feedback from subs, colleagues and whom it may concerned 5. T-tireless putting traction in clear communication with subs, tremendously understand that this role is all about leading and not just become a “yes-man”

What i found so helpful is how the manager manage his work day. Is he spend enough time in floor, He is updated with major issues and how people analyze root causes and their thoughts how to solve the issue. Is he part of team or just making reports and join meetings.

Easy, I just observe how he reacts when I did great and when I did bad. If greatness make him grateful and failure make him helpful, he is not only an exceptional manager but an amazing human being. I will die for him.

There are a number of leadership styles from laissez faire to autocratic and each style has its place in certain industries or certain scenario's. Its important to observe the people who manage others to ensure their behaviour and leadership style fits well with the vision of the company and the situation they are managing. It's very easy to loose the respect of your team if they don't get the right type of support from their manager.

In my experience gathering information about employees opinion about the company, always led to management behavior " no body listen to us, they don't know our issues, they don't care, etc" This gives clear idea if the manager is really involved or just get feedback from his assistant or supervisors without getting in touch and listen to whoever needs to discuss ideas or thoughts to improve work.

In my experience, evaluating manager also comes from own observations, how knowledgeable is he in a way I get an answer in ways to improve his way to do his job, also the way he cares and handle KPI's. Did he come with ways to improve business or people through analytical thinking . Find best ways to get the right person in right job. Always has the can do attitude.
