A genuine smile can quickly put people at ease and create a welcoming environment. During my time spent as an educator, I have had to present to many different stakeholders, from students to school board and community members. It's important to remember that everyone is attending with their own "baggage" from the day. Genuinely smiling is a quick way to set the tone for your presentation, and in turn, create a space where people are willing to listen.

As a HR Specialist, a smile is worth a thousand words. The energy that exudes from a smile to an interviewer, to a colleague, to a customer will just make you more approachable and positive. It also motivates you to continue the positivity. But as much as a smile is important, a control of overall body language is also crucial - having a welcoming body gesture, open communication hand gestures and confident posture.

Hands down, the simplest way to build rapport is to smile. That might sound overly simple. Strangely, it's not. I thought I was smiling all the time because I felt happy but then I watched videos of my talk. Arghhhhh! I looked so unhappy. So I taught myself to smile. I became conscious of the muscles in my face. I never would have considered this to be important or useful. I now use my smile muscles to trigger my performing state. To take me from down and inward to up and outward.

Eyebrow is important in impressing that you are relaxing. Just imagine if your eyebrows are still, you look similar to a baby doll who can talk. It looks quite creepy and "too serious". Try to see yourself in the mirror and you will understand. An easy practice is to make ugly face or imitate the movie character. My suggested example is Joey in Friends :)

Usually eyebrows are raised to express important points or express surprise. It does reflect passion and confidence; however, it has to be used only if really needed and must be in line with the body language and tone.

This is a very natural reflex for me. I am one of the lucky ones. This action is hard to produce naturally without it being weird... Too much eyebrow action might make you look like you've just seen a ghost or something. We don't want that.

It's a low-key yet impactful way to show your excitement and passion during a presentation. When you nod, it's like you're saying, "Yeah, I'm on board with this," indicating that you truly believe in what's coming out of your own mouth. It's also a confidence booster, both for you and your audience, who might just find themselves nodding along in agreement.

Powerful and conveys understanding when listening. Sometimes it's a conscious and and unconscious active listening skill. Try it, you'll like it.

Body language is the ultimate communicator ! Words and language are great tools that you can use to deliver a message, and adding a nod while delivering that message only gives more assurity to the audience. This is a double edged sword type of situation as the type of nod also matters. A 'no' nod (nodding left to right) signals negative and a 'yes' nod signals positive. You don't wannna mix this up during your presentation.

When we want to present enthusiastically, it is important to make the audience engage our presentation. So we should help them sense any type of feeling that we want to convey, which can be a result of being doubtful or confused. By frowning for a few seconds, we can effectively show and induce this kind of feeling while telling the story.

Presenting has a theatrical element to it. While the aim is to educate your audience, this is only made possible if your audience is actively engaged and entertained by your content and delivery. Your expressions matter, but they need to be authentic. The audience are guided by your facial expressions as to the importance and value of your msg and widening your eyes conveys excitement and importance. When it occurs naturally, it takes the audience on a journey with you, where they can share in your passion and excitement for a topic that may have previously had no emotional context for them.

To me, a genuine & confident smile and making eye contact with audience are the key. When your audience senses that you are making and maintaining eye contact with them, they will feel more valued and in return, giving more attention and respect to you. Besides, they will also feel that you are a sincere presenter.

Mean what you say and show what you mean. Imagining yourself telling a story to a 5 year old toddler, if you want to get his/her attention, how will you do it? 😉

Only do this with direct eye to eye contact. If you lose eye contact or look away from the speaker and do this, you will offend. Powerful during a testimonial by a prospect to say "wow".

Learn how to "read the room" and adjust accordingly. Notice when you make a certain gesture or expression how your audience responds and adjust your presentation presence as needed in order to gain the participation from your audience you are seeking.

Gently massaging the sternomastoid muscles around the neck region as well as your voice box (it’s okay if it clicks) helps with airflow.
