I monitor this even daily during times of crisis. I also use additional key metrics and analysis to examine the components of net cash flow.

Cash should be monitored daily. My 2 rules for any business are below at number 7. All businesses should operate a 13-week rolling cash flow. Without this, you are running blind and have no idea how much of the bank account today belongs to you or what you need going forward. The RCF is not an exercise in precision, but an indication of what is likely to happen based on what we know today. It operates quite simply with opening balance + receipts - payments to get the closing balance. Any overdraft can be added to that to show a net surplus or deficit. For example, if you give 30 days credit your debtor days should be around this number. If not, something is going wrong and you need to make a change. Credit control should be done daily - you provided the product or service so make sure you get paid on time. It's your money! Accounting software usually generates the aged report by 30 day categories. I want to ensure that the end 4 columns are zero (over 30, 60, 90, 120 days), and if not that, there is an action on someone in the team to deal with it. Doing this daily makes a huge difference and will significantly improve the position. Your clients will change too!
