It works best for e-commerce Packaging (where a unique unboxing experience is key and could be smartly enabled by minimalism). Nobody wants to have a Packaging full of air delivered home, right!?

To optimise Packaging Waste, effective design can be achieved by following the Waste Management Hierarchy: the first priority being waste 1. Prevention (ie optimising packaging dimensions/models/materials) 2. re-useability of the packaging (designing for appropriate re-use eg double bi-adhesive application for returns), 3. recycling (using material and packaging products that can be recycled and are certified to be!), 4. recovery (create a new product from its waste eg eco-cushion filler bags made with paper scraps by @botta EcoPackaging) and finally 4. disposal of the waste as a last resort.

What’s old is new again, and it’s not sustainable. There’s a growing backlash to sustainable structural design with an increase of more interactive packaging. This includes boxes with lifts, raising trays, or subtle movements created by ribbons or magnets even if this makes the packaging unrecyclable. These interactions have the power of memorable experiences at the moment of unboxing and higher chances of social media sharing followed by short term collection before going to landfill. The ability to create these experiences in sustainable materials and designs has to combat the higher costs of added materials and manual assembly making less sustainable materials and processes that much more attractive.

When designing a packaging for everyday object, a chocolate, a facecream, a shampoo, we, as designers, should pay more attention to inclusivity. A cap on bottle that is easy to open, will not only be amazing for those with lower dexterity in their hands, but for everyone. Taking care for contrast, in more than one way, between background and text, will help more people than just visually impaired or colour blind. And see-through sticker with braile will not even be a bother or need "making space" for it (tho, even if it would, it's worth it). There is much more things, that not only we don't think about, we are not taught, so we need to research ourselves, but let's do this, bc we can make some lives easier and better in this small way.
