What techniques help translators balance quality and speed?

If you are a translator, make sure you engage with your client or project manager and request to provide you with all references needed. Glossaries and pre-flight material as well as a brief are crucial to understand the product you will be working on. Quality and expections will always be compromised if these are not shared. If you are using client's tools make sure to ask to have these integrated so you can run checks as you go along for quality and consistency. Using machine translation and AI gen tools are also an efficient and productive way to be time efficient and meet deadlines. They are consistent and time effective but never free. Always provide the best service but only the one the client is willing to pay for.

In my experience, I had a magical tip: read the whole source text before translating a single word. I always ignored this rule. However, when receiving a request while out, I had to use the few minutes I had before getting to my desk. So, I had to "read" only. Unexpectedly, it seems that this full reading did not waste my time, but it saved time potentially spent on correcting mistakes of lack of understanding/context, a type of mistakes that I now avoid when making the full reading a basic step at every task I'm assigned.

They automate editing processes by fixing tags or proofreading to decrease the temporal and technical effort, and 2. They save you time to focus more on the cognitive aspect of the translation improving the quality of your work. I'm a huge fan of tools and SAASs! Not just CAT tools or MT but everything digital. I use DeepL, Grammarly, and other online dictionaries and databases. I use SAAS for creating invoices and managing my income/expenses. I use spreadsheets and online design apps to do my logos. I digitalized my official stamp and try not to use paper at all. Tools can't do your job for you, but they can definitely make your life easier.

In my view, translators can enhance quality and speed by leveraging AI as allies. Integrating MTPE with deep language expertise optimizes both aspects. Transitioning from translation to MTPE demands effort but offers significant benefits.

Regarding technology, use dictation tools to get the bulk of the writing done. If my initial Spanish texts are too rough, e.g., court documents or contracts that won’t go into Trados, I dictate them in their original Spanish into a cleaner document using Dragon. Then, once in Trados, which gives me an MT in English, I use multiple resources to improve this translation. Then I finish it off again with Dragon, but this time using it in English to quickly perfect style, cohesion and rhythm.

Nothing like being bilingual. Using machine translation takes time writing whatever you want to say to see and read the translated text, whereas being fully bilingual obviates the machine aided translation.

The best way to take care of yourself is by making sure that you do not give away your skill and knowledge to AI. If AI is bound to replace us (translators/interpreters) in the future - the very near future, in fact - at least we will live with the satisfaction that we didn't bring it upon ourselves. Work-life balance is usually hard to obtain, but it makes a huge difference. • Find out when you work best (early morning, midday, late at night) and organize your days accordingly. • Sleep enough hours every day. • Make an effort to go out of your house: take a walk, go to the gym, even have a cup of coffee somewhere.

Make the most of your time by blocking out hours when you feel the most productive (personally I love starting early), take a break and go outside to get some fresh air, come back reenergized and finish the day strong feeling accomplished and make progress. Your health is top priority, so make sure that you take time to rest, eat well and do what makes you happy!

Translation is very intensive in cognitive terms. Indeed the cognitive load sometimes leads to overload and exhaustion due to the complexity of the translation task. This is one reason why extremely high productivity levels in short bursts are not sustainable across the whole working day, day-in, day-out. While in a CAT tool you may think that you are only focusing on the active segment, you also nevertheless need to understand the segment in its context within the text as a whole. To be productive you need to banish sources of unnecessary distraction (e.g. from shared offices, background noise and conversation) that may also increase the unnecessary cognitive overload. In this regard, noise cancelling headphones can be very helpful.

Keep track of your time to understand which translation takes how much time and what types of translations from what clients provide the best hourly rate in the end of the day. Helps to prioritize the tasks and clients and to avoid over- or underbooking your work time.
