Networking in 'X' industry is the same as it is in any other industry!! Networking - at its core - is who you know and how you know them. The goal here is not to go meet the most influential people in a specific space and hope they'll do you a favor. The goal is to build meaningful relationships with other professionals. Some of the best networking I've done has been with people in the same start class as me from consulting. I spent an insane amount of time with these people who have all become friends, mentors, and 'connections' to the numerous organizations where they now work. Networking isn't something that opens doors overnight. It can take years, but the quality (not quantity) of your network will pay off in the long run!

If you don't have any work experience - practice, practice, practice, and _document_ that practice. Put code on GitHub, write blog posts, post what you found or learned on LinkedIn, do something that makes you stand out from everyone else. Certifications are cool, but without the working experience, they are useless to many employers. Show that you can deploy what you learned during the certification learning in some way!
