1 Identify the source

Before you react to a disruptive behavior, try to understand why it is happening. Is the participant bored, confused, angry, or insecure? By identifying the source of the disruption, you can tailor your response accordingly and avoid escalating the situation.

2 Use ground rules

One way to prevent or reduce disruption is to establish and enforce clear ground rules for the group. Ground rules are the norms and expectations that guide how the group interacts and communicates. You can either create them yourself or involve the group in developing them. 3 Address the behavior, not the person

5 Seek support from the group

Sometimes, the best way to deal with a disruptive participant is to seek support from the group. You can ask the group for feedback, suggestions, or opinions on how to handle the situation. You can also invite the group to share their perspectives, feelings, or experiences related to the disruption. By involving the group, you can create a sense of collective responsibility, accountability, and ownership for the group process and outcomes. You can also leverage the wisdom, diversity, and creativity of the group to find solutions or alternatives.

6 Use private conversations

If none of the above strategies work, you may need to have a private conversation with the disruptive participant. A private conversation is a one-on-one dialogue that aims to address the issue, understand the perspective, and find a resolution. You can either initiate the conversation yourself or invite the participant to talk to you. Choose a suitable time and place for the conversation, such as during a break or after the session. Be respectful, empathetic, and assertive in the conversation. Explain the problem, express your concerns, listen to their point of view, and negotiate a way forward.
