Your robotics team has diverse technical skills. How do you ensure everyone collaborates effectively?

Set goals before defining roles because to truly take into account diversity of skill sets and backgrounds, it's more important to focus on what people can bring to accomplishing the goal. Many people excel in one or two technical areas but fail to integrate with other work. With clear goals set, then my preferred approach is to work with team members on choosing roles/tasks/positions that work together to accomplish the goal. Otherwise people want the role that best improves their CV/profile, not the role that achieves the goal.

When developing our school robotics teams I have found that clearly defined roles help foster a collaborative team culture where each member feels valued and essential. When everyone understands their role and how it fits into the larger goal, it promotes cooperation. Team members can effectively communicate and support each other, knowing who to turn to for specific expertise. This clarity reduces potential conflicts and misunderstandings, leading to a more harmonious and motivated team. This is reinforced as they each contribute to their engineering notebooks documenting their learning.

To ensure effective collaboration within a diverse robotics team, it's crucial to establish clear communication channels and encourage open dialogue. Emphasize the value of each team member's expertise and foster a culture of respect. Implement regular cross-training sessions to share knowledge and skills, promoting a better understanding of each other's work. Utilize project management tools for task allocation and progress tracking. Finally, celebrate team achievements to reinforce a sense of unity and shared success.

Da die Robotik mittlerweile ein extreme Bandbreite an Automationsprozessen bereitstellt ist es absolut notwendig dass sich einzelne nur mit speziellen Prozessen wie Kameratechnik, Fügetechnik, Kollaborative Robotics usw. beschäftigen, um für den Kunden das best möglichste Ergebnis zu erzielen. Dies ist nur im Team möglich!

The definition of goals in a collaborative work team is essential for it to be effective. Having clear objectives for each member can help ensure that the final results are achieved with greater certainty. In addition, integrating these goals can ensure that each team member feels valuable and capable of helping his or her teammates. Undoubtedly, defining individual and collective goals as a team is key to collaborating effectively.

The team should be included in setting the goal. Involving them early on in the process is a great base for future efficient work together.

Definir metas claras e alcançáveis para a equipe de robótica é essencial para direcionar esforços e acompanhar o progresso. Divida o projeto em marcos gerenciáveis, garantindo que todos compreendam e aceitem essas metas. Isso alinha as contribuições individuais aos objetivos coletivos da equipe.

Los objetivos tendrán un patrón similar a los proyectos anteriores. El hecho de definir objetivos fácilmente alcanzables es vital para cumplir con los plazos de la entrega del proyecto. Pero lo que hace destacar a una empresa especialista en programación y/o instalación robótica son los objetivos de desafío de alto impacto, esta técnica consiste en fijar objetivos complejos de alcanzar dentro del proyecto, que ayudan a mejorar y destacar entre otras empresas del sector. Esto ayudará individualmente a estar motivado y mejorar como profesional, ademas de obtener un plus económico para los trabajadores que cumplan este ambicioso objetivo.

Having a defined development plan within the team is important. Clear goals, plans and direction lead to great results within any team. And always remember a team is a team, work with the team as this increases motivation to reach the end goal. Go into meetings with a defined agenda and an indication of what the meeting will accomplish. This keeps meetings meaningful and beneficial.

This fosters collaboration, sparks creativity, and helps solve problems through diverse perspectives and collective efforts which results in clear cut goals and achievements

One thing I’ve find helpful about encourage team members is always listen and ask open question to dig deeper in their knowledge, sometimes 20 minutes of brainstorming with different roles and perspectives could save a couple of hours trying to figure out a problem or define the most cost/efficient way of doing things. In order to always create a safe environment to share ideas is great to: - Foster an outside of the box approach. - Take notes of everything discussed. - Keep a respectful environment.

En un proyecto de robótica, hay mutltiples talentos involucrados y es imprescindible una excelente y fluida comunicación entre todos. Un buen líder, como gestor del proyecto, puede facilitar ese proceso.

Having a fitting culture here is key. If it is normal to ask questions, then people will be open to also ask for needed skills when it is needed.

El trabajo en equipo en el sector de la robótica es crucial para destacar como empresa en este mundo. En las reuniones de equipo se debe de comunicar los obstáculos que se presenten durante el proyecto, a cualquier persona del equipo se le puede ocurrir la solución. Hay que escuchar todas las propuestas esté en la posición jerárquica en la que esté. Ninguna idea es mala, todas las ideas sirven. Pueden ser un desencadenante para una brillante propuesta.

Documenting the results independently from the different try’s and communication is a big value if someone is starting into the projects later

The team should be on top of using the SOTA tools for effective management. Tracking project ToDos, setting goals, sharing resources, logging data, handling PII data, etc are all very critical components and new tools should be leveraged. At the same time, if one team member can learn a tool, then having sessions where they can knowledge share could be a great way to foster a positive, growth culture.

en lo personal uso lo siguiente: Gestión de Proyectos: Usar software como Jira o Trello para planificar, asignar tareas y monitorear el progreso. Control de Versiones: Implementar Git para gestionar y compartir código, permitiendo colaboraciones sin conflictos. Comunicación: Manténer una comunicación fluida con Whatsapp o google meet para discutir ideas y resolver problemas rápidamente. Simulación y Diseño: Utilizamos simuladores como Gazebo y software CAD como Fusion 360 o Inventor para diseñar, probar y iterar sobre componentes antes de construir. Documentación: Emplear herramientas como Google Docs para mantener una documentación clara y accesible para todos.

La herramienta de trabajo debe incluir un historial de escrituras y modificaciones, sobre quien es el autor de cada una de ellas. De este modo será mucho mas fácil detectar un código erróneo. Ademas de tener un apartado de chat y mensajería con confirmación de mensaje leído. Es muy importante que los códigos escritos por diferentes personas del equipo no se chafen entre ellos, ni lleven a ordenes o problemas en la actuación de la maquina / robot.

Even-though documentation and clear record keep is important, but there is the need for fewer but more effective tools. There are literally thousands of softwares and platforms for every single issue. But often the robotics team needs universal tools so that there is a standard in the whole Company for easier data transfer.

There is an amazing saying, be the leader that promotes a culture where it is difficult for someone looking at the team to tell who the leader is. Encourage learning, encourage team work and encourage cross functional training in both the technical/equipment and people functions. A good leader creates other good leaders.

I believe that every engineering team will either keep growing and learning, or they will move toward producing outdated technologies.

If somethings did not work for one person it is important to share it so the full team can learn from it. Encourage person to do this, so others will follow the example.

Un equipo de robótica es mas productivo cuando todos saben los aciertos y errores que se pueden cometer. Es por ello que debe existir un historial con buscador de los errores o problemas surgidos durante la programación de cada empleado. Cuando se incorpore un nuevo miembro al equipo podrá informarse y solucionar fácilmente los problemas o dudas que le surjan. Se puede aprender de todo el mundo. El equipo debe estar al día con la formación y las nuevas tecnologías.

Many times when there is a clear set goal in mind. The cool and innovative ideas perhaps on the fringes get discouraged or disvalued. It is important to keep an open hour/day where the team members are encouraged to utilize their creative freedom to pursue an idea. It is quite often the case that ideas that come out of such endeavors become the product MVP.

Software, Electrical, Mechanical, and Theoretical studies form the four interdependent pillars of robotics. Each field is robust individually, but they rely on each other to create functional robots. Theoretical science develops algorithms and mathematical models, which software implements. Electronics bring these to life, while mechanics make them applicable in the physical world. Building a robot involves careful trade-offs between these disciplines. Respecting each subsystem and fostering collaboration among them is key to turning the impossible into reality. This synergy of diverse fields is what enables the creation of advanced robotic systems, pushing the boundaries of what's achievable in robotics.

Conflict resolution is needed more regularly than one would anticipate. It is essential to building a great team culture. Hence, it is one of most important jobs of the team leader to identify the root cause of the conflict, whether it is the resources at hand, timeline, release aggressiveness, setting priorities, tech debt, or political conflicts. Fostering a positive culture, where such conflicts are easily and appropriately resolved without any escalation is important. For example, the path towards system development could take two roads. Need to evaluate options, and do some prototyping or put an effort before shunning the idea down, so that the team can be onboard the selected direction and not be conflicted.

I recognize that conflicts can arise, but I see them as opportunities for growth rather than obstacles. When disagreements occur, I make it a priority to address them promptly and constructively. By facilitating discussions where all voices are heard, I aim to turn conflicts into stepping stones for innovation, ultimately strengthening our team’s cohesion and driving the project forward.
