Your team is stuck in a rut. How can you spark innovation and drive change?

One of the most effective ways to promote creativity and change in a team is to challenge preconceived notions. To find fresh viewpoints, start by identifying implicit beliefs and challenging them. Promote a variety of opinions and conduct experiments to refute presumptions. Keep an open mind and take lessons from your mistakes; you might discover something unexpected. Teams can create positive change and open up new possibilities by questioning presumptions.

Implementing brainstorming sessions or innovation workshops can foster creativity and collaboration. Additionally, I would empower team members by delegating responsibilities and providing opportunities for them to take ownership of projects. Lead by example, demonstrating a willingness to embrace change and try new approaches.

Experimentation is for those who have the courage not to fear failure. Too many get caught up in how they look vs the results. We say we win or we learn. We can only get better. We challenge the status quo and will be open to change. The only thing I am firm on is being flexible. When you try things, you can pivot quickly. You can build it into the DNA of your culture. Trying new things. Searching for the weird, the unique, the difference makers. Those who can not accept what was. If I ever hear, this is how we always do it The status quo is too attractive to most. There is no status quo. You are either getting better or your competition is catching up. Always be improving. Go to the edges. You will see it really is not that far out.

It quickly can become a habit to always let everyone in your team play to their strengths. While this propably creates the most reliable results in the shortes timeframe it also increase the chance for operational blindness. Having them switch seats and try out less familiar tasks can easily jump start a creative process

Collaboration is the new black. There is so many new technologies that bring minds together. I have been a part of many CEO groups. Love to sit around and bat ideas together. We all are on a journey. Who you bring with you can be the difference of making it or not. During the pandemic, I pivoted weeks before most knew what was happening. Everyone thought I was crazy like Noah building the ark. It wasn't me... it was my network. Had dozens of conference calls. On with a couple Fortune 500 CEO's. Got intel well beyond my scope and pay grade. I did not just get that access, I had built it over years. Go out there and add value to everyone, build connections. You have to give a lot to get when you need it. Can't just snap your fingers.

Collaboration CAN be done via remote tools and for some processes it’s better than in person. I’ve worked remotely with global teams since 2008, and facilitated major innovation initiatives. From lessons learned, the greenfield exercises at the outset of innovation exercises do best virtually. Using virtual whiteboards removes the “loudest voice in the room” bias which may honestly be stifling creativity. Then the virtual experience really shines as you group, categorize, move things around - every person can see, read, expand notes, even simultaneously verify questions with outside parties or hold clarifying sidebars without disturbing main meeting. If you want to collaborate efficiently or get a different result, consider a virtual start.

Organize a hackathon on a challenge you face in your work and invite people who do not regularly work on this topic. They truly think differently. For example, work on challenges in departments that all employees interact with, such as HR or IT. Have them think along with you as HR or IT specialist for a day to combine user experience with gaining completely new insights!

Seek the best. Never be the smartest person in any room. Today it is easier than ever to get access to the greatest minds in every different facet. I love MasterClass, YouTube, Harvard Business Review. You can seek insights on almost any topic. Listen those whose stories have nothing to do with yours or in your particular situation. Find the ties that bind different stories together. I love finding ideas from unrelated uncorrelated things. It is not like a light switch, but rather takes practice. When you can see the invisible and what no one else seems to see is when magic happens. You start being able to see around corners and before everyone else. It can be an advantage. Zig Ziglar said turn your commute into a university. Listen.

You also have to guard against perfectionism in the prototyping process. I work with some very smart individuals who often have a hard time letting a product or component out of their hands because “I just need to fix this, or tweak this…” - it irks them to their bones that it doesn’t feel ‘done, done’ yet. However, what if we’re fixing things that customers don’t even care about? What if we’re missing major things they DO care about? Our first goal is to get something viable, not perfect, that lets us iterate - preferably in a direction that our customers care about. With testing, trial, error, and customer feedback there will be time in future to make it (closer to) perfect!
