Team Briefing: Participate in a team meeting to discuss current investigations, share updates, and coordinate efforts with other team members. 2. Evidence Collection Travel to crime scenes or corporate offices to collect digital evidence. This includes computers, mobile devices, storage media, and network logs. Document the collection process meticulously to maintain the chain of custody. This ensures that the evidence remains admissible in court.

Cyber is a field where the gaining of new skills and continuance of education never stops. Technology changes very quickly in modern times and new cyber threats and vulnerabilities are always part of those changes. Accreditations need updating, but keeping up with new hands-on experience is the best way to ensure you are staying just as skilled and keeping yourself in the loop.

Use online platforms that offer hands-on labs and simulations to practice real-world scenarios. Contribute to open-source cybersecurity projects to gain practical experience and visibility. Attend cybersecurity conferences, meetups, and seminars to learn and connect with industry leaders. Seek out mentors who can provide guidance, advice, and support in your career journey. Technical skills alone won't suffice if you don't grasp business objectives and how to support them. Simply adding more certifications to your bio won't help in that case.

I cringe when people refer to themselves as cybersecurity experts. There are so many areas of specialization in this field; you can't be an expert in them all. Instead, identify your passion and conduct market research to find opportunities. Once you find a field you're passionate about with reasonable demand, focus your learning and development towards becoming an expert. Also, consider your past experiences, education, and projects that make you well-suited for your chosen field. Create your expert narrative and commit to it.

Once you have a couple of cyber certifications, focus on diversifying your skills. After obtaining my CISSP, I pursued CIPM and CIPT (IAPP privacy certs), completed an executive leadership program, and enrolled in a Master's in Engineering Management. This broader skill set helps me stand out among other cyber professionals with more certifications. I can see the bigger picture, plan, communicate, and execute in ways that motivate people to get things done.

Teamwork, collaboration, communication and being able to see the "big picture" are crucial for working as a truly good cyber expert. The last of those soft skills seems to be the one I see the least in our working world: I work with plenty of people who see and examine every last detail and can give great focus to an individual vulnerability or security improvement. However, it's priceless when I get to work with someone who sees and understands the full picture of the organisation and its assets.

Having done lots of past training throughout my career- we will learn more ourselves as a mentor or training leader on TEAMS/ZOOM for example. Below are suggested stages of learning (where mentoring is highest form) STAGE 1 -- When we READ only & don't practice often, it may be quickly forgotten STAGE 2 -- When we DOCUMENT, we take an extra step to WRITE out our own understanding STAGE 3 --When we MENTOR or TEACH - we kick it up a notch, as have done the 1st two stages above. Sharing it back to others is a "WIN-WIN" for both the teacher & the student(s) :)

My only advice to cybersecurity folks is to add more skills beyond technical I have observed the need for understanding corporate structure and strategy in order to build a successful comprehensive cybersecurity program

Avoid specialising. Get broad, get involved. Don’t stick yourself to particular technology. Convictions should be held loosely and change based on business needs. Get savvy about how business works, get savvy with what’s new but also never forget that most places don’t need deep specialists. They need broad generalists that are capable of flexing into various risk areas.

Seek to combine security operations teams, their tools, metrics and frameworks with other teams, such as fraud prevention, digital risk and threat intelligence – or business use cases themselves. After all, maintaining alignment with the Business is your obligation; the x-factor is to position yourself ‘as’ Business.
