You're aiming to lead in Data Governance. What qualities set you up for success?

I certainly agree with this. A true Data Governance leader must have the ability to clearly understand and analyze the past and current data landscape, and also the ability to predict the future.

Technical expertise is must for any data governance leader. Understanding architecture, tech stacks, programming, and data engineering is important so that you can offer insights and advice to DG-allied teams on how their practices might impact the goals of DG. Improving quality, for example, often involves performing root cause analysis. These root causes are often a result of architectural / data design issues and or data engineering processes. Additionally, having technical experience of working with the data means that DG people understand pain points leading to more effective collaboration. Without technical expertise, DG practitioners would be unable to respond to these sorts of issues.

I actually agree with this; a great data governance leader should be bilingual. He should be able to speak both technical and business languages.

Nope. This might be true in some place, but too often the technical skills are overrated. Don't get me wrong, this is helpful. But data governance is NOT about technology or tool. It is about processes and people. Note: I do not see GDPR skills as technical expertise. Same for Data quality (well, there might be both here))

Data touches all areas of the organization these days so collaboration is a must. Relationships at all levels is key as each level could use data differently. Creating a culture of shared responsibility around quality, security, and continuous improvement is vital.

Change and Change Management is critical to successful data governance. Depending upon the current maturity of the data governance program, will determine the level of change. In most cases, people are already performing DG activities, so it's a matter of more structure and consistency. Aligning DG efforts with other change management efforts across the organization is a great strategy.
