Often, we overlook the fact that cost is designed into the product. It is much more about the design decisions we make and less about our choice of supplier. Don't sacrifice supplier relationships on the alter costs. Most of the time it doesn't end up worth it in the end. If you really want to break ground in cutting costs, talk with your suppliers about what you could change to make step-changes in product cost. Look at ways to adjust your product to improve supplier processes. Different components. Comparable materials. The biggest gains come bringing suppliers in EARLY in the design process with an eye to optimizing costs, making smart tradeoffs, and getting the job done for the end customer.
