You’re considering an advanced degree as a consultant. How do you know if it’s worth the investment?

It's important to align the degree with your long-term career goals and understand its value in your industry. Advanced degrees can deepen expertise, open higher-level opportunities, and provide valuable networks. Assessing the return on investment is key, considering not just salary prospects but also personal growth and job satisfaction. If these factors align with your professional and personal aspirations, the degree can be a worthwhile investment.

Basis my own experience and the experience of having seen peers over the years embarking upon the journey towards an advanced degree, the one advice I would have for those interested is that ensure the degree is either from one of the top institutions known for the skill worldwide (and I mean top 10-50 colleges), ensure it puts you directly in the middle of a very valuable network which can propel your career further and last but not the least, ensure it can get you access through the doors of the offices you need to get past to make your passionate case selling that skill for which you want to earn that advanced degree. If all the three or at least two are a tick in the box, then your monies are worth, else do seriously reconsider.

Controversial suggestion: consider if you will actually enjoy learning the things associated with this degree? Do you want to work with them in the future? Studying something you hate is a miserable time (and that misery will bleed over into your consulting work), and becoming more qualified in something you hate just means you will get to do more about it.

I agree with @vish.many a times people applying aren't even aware of where tis going to take us ? And.they aren't even aware That for mid career professionals it's the "network " as a major outcome that should be considered at when applying.
