You’re dealing with a boss who isn’t supportive. What can you do to get the support you need?

I really want to be able to get the most out of our relationship and wanted to catch up with you about what they could look like' sets the context and understanding that you want to achieve a positive outcome. That context is invaluable in creating a positive environment and setting expectations for a positive outcome.

"What's in it for you is a key!". Start showing him/her the value and what they get if they support you. In the contrary of the article, don't start with your needs!

You need to understand that every one of us is trying to fulfill or meet a need, and so is your boss. What are your expectations and needs? That is what you need to communicate to your boss. Be clear and concise, don’t complain about what you are not getting. Try to understand what keeps your manager busy and what he or she is driven by. When we make less about ourselves and what we don’t get and more about how I can serve, that will come back to you. Maybe not from your manager but from somewhere else in the organization. Know you are responsible for your success and growth, not your manager.

This is hard question to answer as you have bosses and leaders. A boss who is not trained or is an accidental manager will never support you as the infrastructure and training has not been there for the individual to learn . A leader will do there utmost to support you and be there to help. It really depends on the company and what training you provide your new managers.

Consider other individuals who can offer support, if it's not available from your manager. Based on what specific support you need, you may access that from peers, mentors, other leaders, and so on.
