You're drowning in a sea of online applications. How can you ensure your resume stands out?

In a sea of applicants, this comment aligns with "tailor your resume" advice. I'd recommend not adhering to the old school 1-page resume guideline. While you do not want a long resume, you need to share your experience in enough detail to show that your background is a solid fit for the role. You have worked hard whether it's in school, internships, or in your career - show your value & help make the match between your skills & the job you are applying to. The extra effort is worth it.

I’ve found it helpful to add an impactful summary statement that highlights your qualifications and demonstrates that you are the ideal candidate for the specific position to which you are applying. Begin with a powerful statement that immediately grabs attention, and tailor this statement in a way that is responsive to the job announcement. For example, “Passionate and experienced climate science communicator with over two decades of expertise in translating complex scientific information into accessible and engaging content” tells me a lot more about the candidate than a statement like “Climate scientist with over 20 years experience in science communication.”

The most important thing you can do is make sure your resume is scannable and that when it IS scanned, the readers see content that impresses them and not just that you "do things". The goal is that the readers come away thinking, "Wow, this is impressive, I think I will READ this resume!" It's not enough to just put your accomplishments on the resume. If you bury them in the bullet point, your resume still may not get read. Make sure the accomplishments are the first things the readers see.

The days of using a single document for myriad vacancies are long gone. The candidate that stands apart from the rest of the pool is the one that quickly and easily displays competency in areas that remedy the employer's pain points. By tailoring each document to align with the target role/application, candidates can show how they not only have the necessary acumen to perform the role well but also proven successes from their past that can be replicated for their new employer. This is how a candidate moves from "VALUE PROMISED" to "VALUE PROVEN."

There a few things to consider here. How early have you submitted your application? Have you aligned your resume with the key criteria of the role applied for? Do you really feel you are the 'best' fit for this role? Have you got a tailored cover letter which provides a mini-show case as to what you can offer and why you? Contemplate these questions and you'll stand a strong chance. A direct call to the hiring manager is also great coupled with a personal email or LinkedIn message. Word of caution - Only make yourself known if you honestly align with the role and it's what you want or you'll run the risk of being a pest!

Limit yourself to two fonts on your résumé. There are so many fabulous and unique fonts that it can be tempting to mix and match several in an effort to make a stand-out impression. Play it safe, however, and limit yourself to no more than two fonts that are widely available. Even better, use just one font and carefully mind your use of formatting in bold, caps, etc.

It might be tempting to have a fancy, colorful, graphically designed resume template that you found on Canva. But these templates wreak havoc inside an ATS and are difficult to scan. Keep it simple and straightforward with formatting and avoid any tables, text boxes, images, or graphics. If you're in a creative field, then link to your portfolio in your contact information to show off the creative side of you.

Keep it simple but impactful. Fancy fonts and changing size of text is not the way to go and that does not make it impactful. Think about how you read a paper submitted to you. You look for meaning, right? I try to think what does the employer want to know? What meaning am I trying to convey? Then, succinctly, write it as such. It should not be flowery, but to the point. If it needs to be 1, 2, or 3 pages...so be it! The content is key!

In today’s competitive job market, getting your resume shortlisted from a pool of applications can be a challenging task. However, by effectively highlighting your achievements, you can significantly increase your chances of standing out. Quantify your successes, highlight relevant achievements and showcase how it impacted on team and company.

Accomplishments are king. What problems have you solved? Projects that you managed? Processes you improved? What were the end result of those? The answers to those questions form your resume bullet points. I do believe in having a high level descriptor of your overall responsibilities to give a sense of scale to your role.

Achievements rule! Especially with soooo many candidates simply listing keywords or boring tasks from the JD - accomplishments really help you stand out. They are rarely duplicated especially when they have quantifiable data. I believe your resume should highlight every single thing you were praised for in your role.

Achievements could be anything, if you have winning certificates, good for you, if not, don't hesitate to mention participation certificates. They are equally helpful in elevating your value. Instead of feeling satisfied with your achievements, try to grab more irrespective of your certificate counts and age. Obtaining certificate and gaining knowledge is a never ending process.

Too often individuals will just apply and stop. Actively connecting, asking individuals to pass on your resume and of course learning more about the culture and environment is key.

A great way to develop relationships and referrals is thru common interest. Network often and before you are in need of a role by joining professional associations, civic organizations and seeking volunteer opportunities. People are more likely to refer you for a role if they know, like and trust you. These opportunities offer ways to gain that exposure and trust. You can also add these projects, associations and experience gained to your resume which will make you stand out. When networking show genuine interest in others, prepare a 30 second pitch and be specific in how people can support you..sharing connections, leads, endorsement, etc.

Always, always read the application for clues of what the employer wants. They tell you. If you present them a resume that doesn't speak to their needs...(yes, what they want...) then you are in for a "PASS". People want to know that they are understood. Your first shot at that is to adhere to and speak to ( in writing) their desires or needs with skills that fill those needs. An employer sees that you are really paying attention. That is a good sign. This even makes them pause in the skimming of the document... Which is what you want them to do. It says..."I get it. I have what you want."
