Kudos! Once there, to get to the next level, it’s often a question of scale. Problems have more parameters, more ramifications, more impact. It requires you to apply your problem solving process over a wider net. You need more ressources (people, compute) to consistently apply a productive approach. In other words, you need to work on your coaching skills. Let’s go 💪!

Break the issue into manageable parts, identify core components, and analyze each one to understand causes and potential solutions. Develop a detailed roadmap, assigning responsibilities and setting deadlines. Implement solutions methodically, monitor progress, and make adjustments as needed. Finally, evaluate the effectiveness of the solutions, gather feedback, and iterate. This structured approach demonstrates your analytical and strategic thinking skills, showcasing your potential for higher-level responsibilities.

The unknown is scary. When you start seeing things as they are, the problem will become much more manageable. Here is a simple set of questions that will help you better understand the issue at hand: - What is the challenge at hand? - What REALLY is the challenge? - What is causing it? - What else is contributing to it? - What am I missing? - What is my end goal? - What needs to be done to overcome this challenge? - What resources do I have available? - What do I lack? - What can I leverage? - Who can help me? - How can I get this person to help me? - How can I get the resources I lack?

After dissecting the problem, brainstorm creative solutions to demonstrate your innovative thinking. Propose unique ideas that may not have been considered before, showing your willingness to take calculated risks. This approach can lead to more effective and efficient outcomes. By thinking outside the box and coming up with distinctive solutions, you set yourself apart from your peers and position yourself as a forward-thinking leader within your organization.

The next step is to implement your chosen solution. The most important part of strategy implementation is reviewing its outcome. The outcome must be categorized based on its impact on the desired result and its effect on the team who adopted it. A strategy can only be considered successful if the desired result is achieved along with overall satisfaction/happiness of the team. Any strategy that results into successful outcome, but burns out the people who adopted it cannot be considered an efficient one. This makes strategy review immensely important in terms of fine tuning and enhancing the effectiveness.

Networking does plays a very important part in terms of building a robust back up. There are scenarios when significant workforce shortage can impact a project, that is when networking can be a major problem solver. If the teams are collaborative, members from other teams will be willingly stepping in to support (a proper knowledge transfer has to happen). However lack of proper collaboration and networking does the opposite. In case if the project involves external teams, networking often helps in getting proper insights and guage the anticipated outcomes using the same.

I agree with everything listed above. To invoke Andy Grove (and I fully expect to butcher the quote), but in “Only The Paranoid Survive” he says something to the effect of “the reward for solving a big challenge is an even bigger challenge.” Problem solving is its own reward. Not just for careers, but life. If a Growth Mindset is something you really want (and you probably should want it) solving a variety of problems will get you there. Ideally you work to solve diverse things. On one level, if you’re an engineer, solving lots of dev problems will make you a better dev… but it won’t level you up for career/life. Seek out problems that make you uncomfortable. When problem solving like this is: you think faster and that helps everywhere.
