Medication errors can be one of the dreaded things to encounter as a nurse and self-blame and the fear of punishment can haunt you for a very long time. First thing is to be calm, acknowledge the situation but don't bury yourself in self-blame. This may be hard especially if it led to very adverse outcomes but forgive yourself and count it as a learning curve. Seek help or talk to someone, don't bottle up your thoughts, it may hurt you. Speak to colleagues or anyone that can offer counselling and emotional support if colleagues might also guilt trip you. Take some time off if possible, reflect but don't overbrood, identify what you could have done better and map out strategy for next time. Avoid negative energy as much as you can.
