I think to identify the issues, you have to first have a strong understanding of the business. You have to have a feel for the overall operations, plans, strategies and market in general. Knowing what is going on outside of your focus is crucial. Focusing on a cash flow statement without any broader understanding is very limited in helpfulness. It’s much easier and faster to identify when a real issue has emerged if you are actively involved in the flow of the business. Instead of playing defense you can play offense and know exactly when you will have cash crunches and how to prevent them or adapt in some form to move through them. Nothing worse than surprises, but much of it is preventable if you know what’s going on in general.

I strongly recommend the implementation of a Treasury function. Accounting teams are not properly equipped with the know-how of cash and liquidity topics. A Treasury specialist has the experience to manage cash flow and liquidity in much more depth. Additionally, a Treasurer knows how to optimize gains from liquidity and reduce risks.

When the company is a small to medium sized business, it’s at this point that the hard conversations about reducing owner/administrative salaries usually arise.
