No one knows what this means and to many it means there will be no bill because they are “covered”. Explain the benefits. Explain the terms and how they apply specifically to their benefit. Help patients understand and become their own advocates in the future so they don’t keep running into the same frustrating wall with every Dr visit.

Many patients may not understand what they are being billed for and why there may be multiple bills for one visit. A simple example may be a bill for an Anesthesiologist separate from the bill for the surgery center they visited, separate from the doctor who performed the procedure. Taking a bit of time breaking down not only the charges they are being billed for but also going over the EOB's they receive and how to understand the charges as well as a responsibility for coins/copay/ded for a patient or even caregiver that is trying to understand where their money is going can make a huge impact in past experiences.

First, I would listen very carefully and then, as accurately as possible reflect back to the patient BOTH my understanding of how he/she is feeling and the specific complaint. This lets the patient know you are both on the same page regarding what the problem is and gives the patient the opportunity to correct anything you said that is in error. Next, I would tell the patient that I would look into what her insurance plan covers and get back to her as soon as possible.

Follow up is so important. The relationship we work to build with our patients in our first conversation should come full circle. The goal is to give reasonable timeframes for return responses and whether or not the patient can expect to hear from me or us along the way or only once a resolution has been received. If there are setbacks, keeping to the plan for communication with the patient remains a priority. While the patient may have been originally looking for a different outcome, I want to make sure they feel I did everything I could to get the best resolution possible for their specific situation at the end of the day.
