Copywriting mentors should have some sort of formal training themselves. While sometimes pure talent can be enough to make a person successful, often giving over a skill is much easier if you were actually taught it yourself.

Additionally, I'd prioritize someone with a successful track record in the field and a willingness to share knowledge generously.

An effective copywriting mentor has to be someone who feels comfortable giving honest feedback. Sometimes mentors feel they are being the biggest help by offering only positivity and compliments, but in reality, the best mentors know how to give honest feedback, in a way that doesn't feel overly critical or condescending.

This is rarely possible even inside a company if you want the most valuable copywriter for your mentor. Instead of regular meets, you can also send your work for feedback and ask for practical tips like what the mentor's copywriting process looks like.

You don’t need a mentor in “Copywriting”. You need a trigger generator. Someone who can just throw clues and cues at you to pick up and draw a whole new picture. Mentorship produced “mini-me” and not original voices while copywriting needs original voices. Find someone who gives you the first drink so you wake up. Everybody else who claims to be a mentor is a cult-creator, utter useless, as it suppresses creativity.
