If you’re calling on SMB prospects I find that many also wear the badge of being an entrepreneur. In sales, if you know your target’s journey or have walked in their shoes, it can go a long ways. During discovery calls, a brief mention of your past experience as an entrepreneur can create common ground. Now that you’ve established that you both were/are entrepreneurs, figure out what they may be worried about as a business owner and it will likely be something that you can personally comment on. For example, pricing is always a concern. Mention that as a bootstrapped executive you know exactly how risky it is to spend on a solution with limited budgets and then tell them three things you can do to assuage their concern. And so on…

I agree that the personal brand has a lot to do in your success in outside sales. Your personality, your band in handling your customers and your execution style can set you appart from the rest. I have so many stories to tell in my career, moving from one company to another didn't change the perception of the customers towards me. I feel in the outside sales, the most important trait is to earn the customers trust. Once you reach that level, you need to do your best to maintain it and avoid anything that can make you spoil what you earned and what you stand for. Also being transparent and genuine make me win in sales. What I live by "don't promise if you can't deliver" helped me win the heart and mind of my customers on a long term.

When I am visiting an existing customer, either at their office or at a job site, I scope out potential sales opportunities that they may not have mentioned to me up to this point in our relationship. In my future communications with them, I will share an article about a product discussing a feature that might benefit them. That plants a seed for future projects.
