You're out in the field studying geology. How can you stay safe from wildlife encounters?

Invertebrates are the most dangerous wildlife. Be sure to take all precautions against ticks and mosquitoes. Diseases often carried by these species can be serious. The probability of negative encounters with vertebrates is much, much lower.

A thorough study of all the trails and tracks that you will have to undertake should be studied properly and carefully. A directory of wild animals inhibiting the area should be known beforehand. Medical, food, maps, GPS, basic self-defense tools, etc. should be readied.

Wildlife Awareness: Before heading into the field, research the area to understand the types of wildlife you might encounter. Different regions have varying wildlife populations, so knowing what to expect can help you prepare accordingly. Behavioral Understanding: Familiarize yourself with the behaviors of these animals. For example, knowing that certain animals are more active at dawn or dusk can help you plan your fieldwork to avoid these times. Sign Recognition: Learn how to recognize signs of animal presence, such as tracks, scat, and feeding sites. This knowledge can alert you to potential dangers before you encounter the animals themselves.

Before everything mind preparation is the key by getting knowledge of wildlife on the specific area because all start in the mind. Once you see it in the field mind will never have a problem.

Organised sched in calls to your base are good too, along with a sat phone and a personal tracking device such as an inReach or Zoleo. I also take a snake bite kit, hammer and extra water everytime I leave the vehicle. Playing music on your phone out loud also helps to alert wildlife to your presence which is preferable in Australia.

1. Always remain calm and avoid running away from an animal. 2. Stay a safe distance away from all unfamiliar animals, even if they seem friendly. 3. Do not corner an animal. If an animal needs to be removed, call the forest or animal control authorities. 4. Wild animals should not be fed and all wastes should be disposed of properly. 5. Keep an eye out for tracks, droppings, and claw or antler markings on trees, which could alert you that an animal is nearby.

Clothing and Footwear: Wear appropriate clothing and sturdy boots. Layered clothing can help you adjust to changing weather conditions, and sturdy boots protect your feet and provide better grip on rough terrain. Bear Spray: If you're in bear country, carrying bear spray is essential. Make sure you know how to use it properly and keep it accessible at all times. Other Safety Gear: Depending on the area, you might need additional gear such as a first aid kit, a whistle, or a GPS device.

As a wildlife biologist, working in remote areas of Australia, the short answer is 'be prepared'. Australia is blessed with a myriad of creatures that can cause you harm, with our fair share of deadly snakes, spiders and other creatures. Being prepared in first aid and having reliable communication tools (e.g. satellite phone or checking in regularly) are essential. Common sense and leaving the animals alone goes along way to minimizing the risk.

Inform Others: Always inform someone about your travel plans, including your intended route and expected return time. This information can be crucial in case of an emergency. Emergency Contacts: Have a list of emergency contacts and the nearest medical facilities.

Weather Conditions: Check the weather forecast for the area. Sudden changes in weather can impact your safety and the success of your fieldwork. Terrain: Understand the terrain you will be navigating. Steep slopes, loose rocks, and dense vegetation can pose challenges.

One thing that has worked for me and my team in the past is to wear clothes with calm colours.......no red, bright yellow, pink and the likes. These colour's have been known to agitate animals and cause them to attack.

Health Precautions Hydration and Nutrition: Carry enough water and food supplies. Dehydration and hunger can impair your judgment and physical abilities. Health Conditions: If you have any medical conditions, make sure to carry necessary medications and inform your travel companions about them.

By thoroughly preparing for fieldwork, you can minimize risks and enhance your safety, allowing you to focus on the structural geology tasks at hand. Proper preparation not only ensures your safety but also enables you to conduct more effective and efficient fieldwork.
