1) Importance of a holistic view - Understand the big picture, think strategically, considering how their programs align with broader goals and contribute to long-term success. 2) Foster strong communication and relationship building - Highlight the significance of effective stakeholder management. Building trust and maintaining open communication with diverse stakeholders is crucial for navigating complex programs and ensuring alignment throughout the process. 3) Promote continuous learning and adaptability - Advise young professionals to stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices. Encourage them to embrace lifelong learning and be adaptable to the evolving landscape of program management.

One thing I’ve found to be helpful is to lead with collaboration. This includes active listening, understanding the team priorities and where your project fits in, and managing effective communications—-clear agendas, meeting notes, ensuring active participation of all meeting attendees, and appropriate escalation-yes, from time to time escalation will be required and should be seen as an enabler to the team vs a barrier

Best way to learn a skill is by executing it. Young professionals can be fearless in learning. No shying away from making mistakes as people will be there to take care of you and teach you. Learning from both success and failures they can have escalated learnings and tried and tested methods handy in hands.

One core skill/trait that helped me initially is understanding the questions to ask my team. I typically fall back to the 5 W’s (Who, What, When, Where, and Why) to start. If you can answer these questions for your program and the tasks laid out, you will have the core of a well planned program. This can be daunting (especially when you may not have the technical expertise in the field) but I’ve found that asking simple questions and encouraging my team to provide me inputs based on their expertise helps cultivate trust and ownership on the team, which typically translates to high performance. Over time you will build intuition and know when/who to question more and when/who to trust more.

One thing that I have found helpful is to learn about the specific characteristics of the product, so you can navigate with many upcoming questions about function-ability, failure mode etc

Networking is crucial for career growth in program management. Young professionals should actively participate in industry events, join professional associations, and engage in online forums relevant to their field. Building a diverse network provides access to valuable knowledge, mentorship, and career opportunities. It’s important to emphasize that effective networking goes beyond collecting contacts; it involves nurturing meaningful relationships and mutually beneficial exchanges with peers and leaders in the industry. This approach not only enhances professional development but also opens doors to new possibilities in their career journey.

One resource that has helped me over the years is the Defense Acquisition Guidebook. In it, there is a section explaining the government’s risk management process with great examples. Some key takeaways/tips: 1. Start by identifying your schedule and cost driving tasks/items. These will most likely also come with the highest risk of either a delay or increase in cost. 2. Gather inputs from your team on Technical Risks! Work with the Subject Matter Expert to understand requirements that are difficult to meet and estimate the impacts. 3. Quantify the impact of the risk, both in terms of $ and schedule. 4. Assess Likelihood and Consequence for each risk. The DoD Framework lays out guidelines for tying quantified impact to Consequence.

I would guide young professionals to success in the field of program management by emphasizing the importance of proactive risk management. Encouraging them to identify potential risks early, assess their impact and likelihood and develop mitigation strategies builds resilience and foresight. Teaching them to communicate risks effectively to stakeholders and incorporate risk management into project planning cultivates a disciplined approach that enhances project outcomes and their credibility as effective leaders in program management.

There are many ways to guide young professionals to success in program management. Some key ones include providing them with the right guidance, mentorship, encouraging continuous skill development, and setting clear goals. Offering them good hands-on experience through real projects and giving them regular constructive feedback can also be very beneficial. It’s important that their successes are celebrated as per milestones, to keep them motivated. Most importantly, they need to mentored to embrace adaptability and resilience which can help them to navigate challenges as well as any changes in the field. Some of these strategies, if planned well will surely help young professionals grow and succeed in their program management careers
