In our experience we have found that having an understanding of not just the project but the purpose of the structure is important in choosing the right software. Models are useful throughout the lifecycle of the structure for maintenance, renovations, expansions, etc. Often times the client’s request the most cost effective option for the immediate need (CAD for example) then request additional features (BIM or GIS data). This change can result in the need data conversion so it’s important to understand the long term goal or overall purpose of the structure.

The world is changing from Era to Era In the beginning when there was no computers people were using scratch paper & everything was done by hand with pencil & they build miracles With the starting of CAD the best tool was & still is the AutoCad as it has a wide flexibility to do all kinds of design mainly with the additional Modules that can be integrated to give roughly the same results as the PDS,PDMS, Microstation,…. But for big projects PDMS is the best

Civil3D. Once I get the hang of its powerful tools etc...which can be cumbersome at times, it's fantastic for civil contractors.

For me & with my experience background 3D modeling shall have the most importance during engineering phase even if some additional expenses were spent but that will help to get an accurate Model that will give Optimized BOQ/MTO as well as the constructibility of the project For me what you spend during 3D modeling Phase will be recovered during Procurement & execution phase & vice versa

As a general contractor, we always refer to the employer requirements and expectations. With both, you could measure preferences, efforts, and cost. For example, if you're being selected in a project to provide 3D modeling and cost estimation only, you need to assume the correct tools and skills to provide with for that project only. In addition, if you have more staff that could do more than modelling and cost estimation, they can be allocated to another project or tender to be utilized with. With that strategy, you could optimized your team and enhance information modelling to some extent in the whole construction industry.

The selection of 3D software should be based on the skills present within the team, as the market offers a variety of excellent tools, but the one chosen should be usable by either myself or other team members.

The 3D modeling tools are very important as stated to get an idea about the shape & figures of the project it can be as well rendered to realistic colors & vision that will help to improve or to adjust the model before proceeding with fabrication

During The 3D modeling phase all stakeholders engineers as well as Package leaders shall be strongly involved during all review till 90% This will help to get an accurate MTO & drawings that will be used during construction phase Package leaders are very important to feed the 3D Admin with all changes in their skids to avoid mismatches or misalignment
