In my mind the most valuable tool is collecting and analyzing existing and historical data, of both your project area and surrounding sites. This way you quickly glean knowledge from experienced geologists, you get a better info about regional trends and can possibly infer and extrapolate info. You could get novel insights and techniques and perhaps even long forgotten targets. Don’t ignore previous work, even if you don’t entirely agree with it.
