It´s not that easy to fit the software development tasks into career boxes. Of course, a new developer starting in this area should consider the options mentioned and find out which part of the development fits better with his/her knowledge and preferences. Being a good front-end developer, in my opinion, includes some "artistic" qualities that are not so important in the back-end, but it´s very usual being hired as a back-end and also having to work in the front side. Knowledge of architectural models are also of importance for every career in software development. as you get a better understanding of what you are doing. So, these careers are so intercorrelated that it´s difficult to follow just one or two of these paths.

There's no shame in starting in quality assurance. Get your foot in the door by testing software. It has it's own skills and is an art unto-itself, but as you develop in this career path to become a software development engineering in test (SDET/SEIT), you use programming to enforce coding tests and for all practical purposes merge career paths with software developers.

There are all sorts of pathways opened when starting out in software engineering. I think it is more important to focus on what you excel at or what makes you get up in the morning and go for the paths you desire that challenge you the most. With that being said here are a couple more roles you could explore during your entry into software development: - Data Science - Database Engineer - DevOps Engineer - Solutions Engineer - Implementation Engineer - Systems Support Engineer - Software Architect Each with their own pros and cons. I’d recommend exploring early and often to see what direction you feel most happiest in.
