You're struggling to sell cars. What are the most effective sales skills for Automotive Sales?

I have always tried to put myself into the buyers situation. Yes, when I was selling cars, I needed to "sell" and provide for my family. When I reached the status of being at the top of my store it was due to help from others, mentors and managers, and was grounded in "find the win for the customer", not for your commission. If you are struggling to sell cars, change your mental approach to helping people buy from you, not you selling them. I have since gone on to being a vendor and selling to dealers. I apply the same approach, find a win for the dealer and help them buy. This applies to customers, they actually do want to buy, they want to love the experience, you can be the difference by helping them find the win.

It depends on the situation - is the market as a whole going through a slump or is it the quality of the Sales team? Yes, of course the basics such as knowing your product, active listening, communication, etc is a given. But what you need to look at is what your Sales team are doing - are they working their database and communicating to their existing customers? Are they speaking to Aftersales customers in the workshop? Are they properly trained? Does your marketing message have a "hook"? Is it effective? Are you on the right online platforms? Are your sales incentives seen as fair, yet challenging?

Honestly alot of people believe let's just make another sale. Even though sales is important to our economy it's important to be relatable to your client. Make them see your not just another sales man and use parts of what they share with you in their conversation so they that you are listening to them. It's also important to know the cars you have on your lot, and I don't mean year make and model but also specs on the car. Also know about the known issues, don't be the one where your customers tell you about the issues in the car.

Selling a car is a process, first, we need to PROSPECT - then create a suspect list then explain salient features and benefits. Invite them to a touch and feel session- maybe let them TASTE the drive, I mean the car its interiors etc. For those who need finance support discuss the finance packages, and leasing options. If that person already has a car offer an evaluation and help in buyback YOU CAN THEN SELL.

Moreover, being familiar with competitors' offerings allows you to highlight the unique selling points of your vehicles. At the end of the day people just want to be validated. Very simply, they want to feel like somebody cares about their input. Getting your customer to engage in self talk releases, dopamine. If you are in sales and you’re not familiar with what dopamine does to the human brain and body you are missing out on a lot. Leverage dopamine. All major marketing companies and fortune 500 brands do, they might have an idea of what they’re talking about. When somebody feels validated they release dopamine at the same time, the prospect is under the belief that they are in the status position in the conversation however they are really putty in your hands.

Muchas veces se comete el error de proponer coches que hay que sacar si o si del stock más que escuchar las necesidades del cliente. Esto tiene repercusiones en el desarrollo comercial de una actividad. Está bien enfocarse en lo que hay que sacar por tema de objetivos, por obligaciones de la marca, pero la manera más eficaz de tener un flujo comercial amplio es una buena estrategia comercial. Al escuchar las necesidades del cliente a largo plazo nos llevará a tener un plan de adquisición más amplio y efectivo, según las necesidades del cliente. Tener una disponibilidad que nos dé la posibilidad de tener ventas constantes teniendo una buena rotación del stock. Hay que recordar que a veces el cliente hace el mercado...

Escuchar es fundamental, el cliente siempre de alguna u otra manera nos indica cual es su necesidad y esto es lo que permitirá ofrecer el producto deseado.

La claridad en la comunicación es fundamental para el cierre de una venta comercial. Va de la mano del conocimiento del producto y de las necesidades del cliente. Es importante que el cliente se sienta cómodo y no se sienta engañado. Muchas veces se nos olvida que el empatizar con el cliente es algo que debería de ser normal y no ser algo esporádico. Muchos de los clientes que compran constantemente no lo hacen siempre por un mejor precio. En muchas ocasiones la actitud, trasparencia, el trasmitir confianza crea una relación que va más allá del precio y que se vuelve la clave para cerrar una venta.

Speaking of BS! Do not mirror their actions. You’ll look like a monkey mimicking another monkey. Just be yourself. Be the version of you that you like. Stay professional and sure joke around. The whole body language thing is a crock. Any half decent salesperson gets the customer on side by being honest and listening. Qualify properly and present the right car to fit the customers needs. Really really simple.

Now this, I don’t give any credit from what I learned from other sales guys. I actually will play a bit of detective, my subconscious mind will find relatable things style of apparel, there mannerisms maybe what they drove or have with them and lastly who they have with them and allowing those simulators to have light shined on that, and even sometimes just that will give a huge leg towards the common goal. Find a body, say hi and make a friend. :)

Remember you’re just solving the clients puzzle …..ask questions listen carefully they will surely detail the “road to the sale”

Typically I will fall on the Logic card and not let any emotions come in at this point, I can still keep someone laughing with telling them their payment or out the door figure isn’t what they wanted, just show you’re trying! I will go back and forth and typically work any clients offer with themselves and get reasoning in a logical perspective if I can and by doing so most of the time the original offer is already bumped before coming to the desk, allows less back and forth and keeps you in good gracias with your client and good gracias with your boss. It isn’t the sales guy and sales manager against the customer, or the sales guy and customer. It’s the trio against the world, :)

This is the area many sales professionals fall short. Many think the final sales process is done when the customer drives away. Following up is a consistent and never ending task to ensure you have a long term customer. Without following up you never strengthen the relationship between you and the customer. You're missing being put in position to sell them their next vehicle or their friends / family. The months you feel like you're short on your goals you can comeback from this by going through your sold prospects. Since you've already given them great service, you've earned the right to ask for referrals.

Its impotent to be ready when your customer is ready. We are in a hospitality business, be persistent not pushy. Often when facing a major life chage like purchasing a vehicle it is accompanied by family or business change. Consumer's often have the foresight of change coming that begins shopping. We have to be available with help and empathy when that change happens.

This is a critical area most did not get right. There's perhaps this perception 'do not fuss a deal, what will be will be'. On the flip side, it's very important to follow-up to gain trust and also bearing in mind, prospects have other sellers they have contacted and may forget who he or she just called or planned a meetup with. In Conclusion, a follow-up serves as reminder and not fuss.

Customer obsession is a critical skill set that has to be developed. The ability to empathise , actively listen and provide constructive feedback to the customer is essential. In today’s digital age the customer has a clear understanding about the product and hence differentiated customer experience is the key to build long lasting and trustful relationships which will help in closing deals by enabling the customer to provide solutions to his needs rather than pushing the product.

El mundo online a cual parece que las marcas hacen “casó”ahora, lleva muchos años ya, por mi experiencia ya que la mayoría de años que he gestionado BermanCars a sido online, he visto fusionarse periódicos con portales web, plataformas absorbidas por otras,el incremento de las subastas y como cada vez los concesionarios que antes no querían el coche de intercambio, a no querer soltarlo.
