Zoning is quite intriguing. Every scenario presents it's unique challenges. Ideally low density zones would have small commercial zones within but the zones but highly control and restricted. In high density residential zones where you're likey to find most of the population of tenants mixing both uses with commercial occupying lower building levels is usually preferred. It is however important to note that zoning presents very dynamic challenges and equilibrium has to be periodically reset.
