You’re a teacher with a challenging student. What are the best ways to help them succeed?

Supporting a challenging student to succeed involves a multifaceted approach that revolves around building a positive relationship, identifying strengths and interests, setting clear expectations, differentiating instruction, providing structure and routine, offering support and encouragement, and utilizing positive reinforcement. By creating a supportive environment, adapting teaching methods, and offering consistent encouragement, teachers can help these students unlock their potential and thrive academically and behaviorally.

Firstly, it is important to realise that the challenging behaviour is the outward expression of the internal root issue. The student needs to know you genuinely care about them as a person, that this is not about their academic performance but about them. There are a myriad of reasons why challenging behaviour presents itself. Educators need to be prepared to accept that investigating the reason why is the only true way to address the outward behaviour. Demonstrate empathy for the student whilst helping them understand the challenging behaviour is not acceptable and give them reasons to help them understand. Share concern, share time, build trust, recognise effort to change or curb behaviour. Accept that we all have 'bad' days!

This is one of the most uneasing but crucial aspect of teaching. As a supplemental instructor, I remember having student who came from a divorced family in a challenging enviroment. One of his parents were in a different country and the other was mostly absent. This anecdote was not something I learned at the beginning of the class. Students will not always choose to be open and they be challenging to teach. It all takes to time it right, build the relationship gradually, and hope to learn something personal that will enable you to understand the whole picture

Firstly, you need to listen to the student with empathy, and without judgement, if he wants to tell you something about his life, he decides. In this case you need to create a safe environment to make him comfortable.

Family problems affect the learners.The teacher need to find out more about the learners background if it happens that he/she is not performing well in class activities.The teacher should at times invite parents share knowledge about their children and find the best way the learners can be handled to encourage them to perform better in classes

I love this question. I had a student today saying they hate maths and will never succeed or pass the exam. I asked them what they enjoy doing outside of college, and they replied going to the gym. I said to them that the exam paper is a weight, they can't bench press. Or a dumbbell they can't curl. They smiled and wanted to know my name to thank me. Challenging students challenge for a reason. Always a reason behind behaviour. Find out what it is and help there. You will do two things, a) understand their life more, and b) demonstrate you care. Whether you offer them time to think, or differentiate the work to match their interests, or offer them a slice of toast as they haven't eaten for days. Each time, show compassion.

Build positive Relationship: Establishing a positive relationship with the student is very important. Show genuine interest in their wellbeing ,strength and build trust. -understand their needs -set clear expectations -provide positive reinforcement -offer support -use visual aids and schedules

I believe that being successful in the classroom begins with building positive relationships with my students. You have to establish a rapport with them. This means getting to know them personally - their strengths, as well as their weakness. This takes work, but it pays off in the end!

It's important to set clear and achievable expectations when dealing with a challenging student. This involves working together with the student to establish essential agreements or rules that both the teacher and the student can agree on. By giving the student a voice and involving them in the process, they will feel more invested in their own learning and take ownership of it.

In setting the expectations, we need to consider some time frame in regards to when the desired behavior needs to be achieved.

To call the student “challenging” is the first problem we need to address. Language matters and this represents a deficit mindset. Ask yourself- who is actually challenged here? The student or the teacher? Once we realize the child is a child and it’s our job to support the child, then we’ll realize we as the adults are the ones who are struggling to reach the child. And it is our behaviors that need to be adjusted.

This is very important for every teacher. A teacher is the driver of the bus in the classroom as he has all the controls. A teacher can decide the pace and the content of his session. Once he has made a mental evaluation of the students, he needs to make a separate compartment for different kinds of students. He can engage the academically brilliant student to revise the earlier syllabus and give more time to slow learners to understand the given topic and write at their own pace. The teacher has to take the responsibility to give some additional lectures beyond the regular time, if required. A teacher can create a 'Study buddy' for slow learners who will help them overcome their doubts. Learning from peers is easy and effective..

During differentiation, we also consider the learner's interest and readiness to learn. The environment matters as well inorder to avoid distraction for the student. As well, when differentiating, this has to capture the content, the process and the product.

Everyone needs a mentor, in India it is common in spiritual evolution to have a master to guide, creating a connection, where one can learn from the other. Creating this connection is the best way to stimulate learning.

We can also create homework club. These are sessions after school which can be organized for students who are challenged. This helps the students to peer teach each other. Remember, reteaching enhances memory. Some students can understand better from the peer's perspective.

Keep offering them knowledge and skills desirable to grow in their domain. 3. Good things get acknowledged after repeated benefits offerings. 4. Storytelling is the best way to appeal their attention. 5. The teacher should keep offering the creative skills. 6. Take up a project based learning. Where they develop affiliation with group. 7. Flipping class can be an effective strategy. 8. Hold your patience, things shall change with time.

Por vezes é necessário esse suporte adicional, tanto ao Professor ou Professora quanto ao estudante. Ao propiciar uma atenção ao estudante desafiador faz se necessário partilhar o momento com os envolvidos, ou seja, trocar com a Coordenação pedagógica, compartilhar com a família ( que no caso será responsável por acionar o devido especialista ) e especialmente uma escuta acolhedora do próprio estudante. Feito isso será importante escola/especialista/família manterem a comunicação e troca de informações, numa parceria com prazos estabelecidos e assegurando a contínua avaliação do processo.

Enfrentar o desafio de educar jovens com dificuldades é uma jornada que exige compreensão, paciência e estratégias inovadoras. Identificar a causa raiz, construir relacionamentos positivos, estabelecer expectativas claras, oferecer instrução diferenciada, incentivar a aprendizagem cooperativa e buscar apoio adicional são passos essenciais. Cada estudante é único e adaptar nossas abordagens para atender suas necessidades específicas não só os ajuda a prosperar academicamente, mas também a construir confiança e resiliência para a vida.

Approachable as a Friend/ colleague and an able Guide and a Motivating Educator. These are the most imp traits of being successful as teachers and it helps in ensuring near 100% understanding of the teaching and at the same time fruitful feedback from students to improve further.
