It's crucial to acknowledge that risks cannot be entirely prevented, but they can be mitigated to an acceptable level, and to enhance our security posture, we must effectively manage risks by continuously identifying, assessing, and prioritizing them. Updating our risk register and documenting our most critical assets are critical steps. Implementing multi-layered security controls (defense-in-depth strategies), conducting regular security awareness training for employees, and having a clear and updated incident response plan in place are crucial measures. Also, continuous monitoring and regular reviews of security controls and their KPI's are necessary to ensure ongoing maturity improvement and adaptation to the evolving threat landscape.

After a data breach, re-evaluate your organization's risk profile by identifying compromised data, breach methods, and vulnerabilities. The organization should also conduct a thorough risk assessment, review access controls in place, evaluate security solutions and update as necessary, and ensure employees follow organizational data protection best practices.

Perform a thorough post-breach study to identify vulnerabilities and weaknesses in order to prevent future data breaches. Put in place effective security measures such frequent software updates, strict access rules, and encryption. Improve the phishing and security best practices training provided to staff. Perform vulnerability analyses and security audits on a regular basis. Create and evaluate a thorough incident response plan. Make sure your data is safe and frequently backed up. Encourage a security-aware culture throughout the entire company. Keep an eye out for odd activity and modify your defenses in response to changing threats.

Don't just look to update a policy "just because."

Network and endpoint security monitoring is essential in defending our environments. Not only from a detective/protective perspective, but also having the tools necessary to determine what has occurred in the event of a breach that went previously undetected. How did the attackers get in? What have they done since? Has information been compromised? Has data been exfiltrated? Have they manipulated process data in the OT network? The list goes on and on. Without the proper monitoring, you'll never know what happened during a breach and will be doomed to have it happen. Again and again and again.

Importantly, these cyber crisis drills should be run on regular basis as compared to once in a year event. Each cyber crisis drill must be meticulously documented, all responses made during the drill is analyzed to understand the enhancement opportunities and gaps in the process, procedures and skills of individuals. Must have the ability to compare each drill with the subsequent ones to measure gaps and contribute to improvements.

A poorly planned Incident response can cause confusion and exacerbate issues. Companies should aim for an organized response that minimizes disruption, which requires clear plans and regular practice. Following CISA's defense-in-depth strategies, the five key stages are: 1.Preparation: Build a response team, document the strategy, train the team, and gather intelligence. 2. Identification: Detect incidents, use forensic tools, and save data. 3. Containment: Prevent data leaks and malware spread, and quarantine infected computers. 4. Clean-up & Recovery: Remediate, clean up, and recover systems; backups are crucial. 5. Follow-up: Review lessons learned, update documentation, and implement security improvements.

The technology is just one part of the 'stack'. Think about the skills of your team, and the procedures you need to develop to be more effective with the tools you already own. So many times, we see organizations with the latest software - but it's poorly configured, and not delivering what the vendors promise.

They now have invaluable experience they cannot get any other way. 2. Your team has been through a lot. You may see the physical impacts, but there are likely psychological impacts too. Bring in a coach for the team and individuals on the team including the CISO all the way to the most junior member.

Breach response doesn't conclude when the threat actor is removed. Often, your insurer or incident response team may have had new software installed - and then upsold on keeping it. Look at your technology fabric, and don't rush to make an informed decision.
