Balancing personalized feedback for students with strict deadlines: Can you effectively juggle both?

I have used a combination of simplified rubrics (like the single point rubric) to quickly review things with students. Mine used to break down into a simple fast grading system on a few standards for each assignment: you are not at the standard, you've got it, or you've really exceeded it. It gave me a chance to refocus students who needed to work while helping students to relax about the pieces that they already had. It really helped the drafting process as well. I tried to focus on 3 things that students should be prioritizing - more than that was overwhelming to both me and my students. When things were really working smoothly, I was able to review work with students using the simplified rubric during student conferences.

You can use checkpoints or giving bonus marks for submitting early the assignments.This gives the chance for learners to finish early and motivated at the same time.

When assessing students' work, often times you will see patterns in student responses. An effective way to provide personalized feedback is to identify created generalized feedback responses ahead of time that allow you to plug in students' specific responses when providing feedback.

Providing formative feedback is, in my opinion, more valuable than summative. By the time students reach the latter, there should have been multiple checkpoints to measure their understanding and progress toward meeting unit objectives and targets. Furthermore, the formative assessment grades can be used to inform the summative assessment. For example, the average grade of formative assessments (a quiz, group project, reading comprehension questions, etc) could be used as the summative assessment grade instead of a final exam. With so much attention on standardized testing there is a lot of test anxiety, and a traditional final exam may not even be the best way to assess a student’s knowledge.

Entonces, con cada trabajo, durante el proceso de adquisición y consolidación, es posible brindar una retroalimentación más específica sobre objetivos concretos. Tareas pequeñas con objetivos puntuales permiten optimizar el tiempo del docente, además de brindar una mirada más específica de la efectividad del proceso de aprendizaje. Del mismo modo, las correcciones del proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje, gracias a estas evaluaciones formativas, permitirán arribar a una evaluación sumativa que demande de menor cantidad de retroalimentaciones. El nivel de logro obtenido en los objetivos que se trabajaron será mayor.

I often allocate time for peer reviews using the assignment rubric before I grade the students’ submissions. It teaches students the valuable skill of constructive criticism and evaluation while allowing them to ask questions in a safe setting. Before using peer review, make sure you’ve created a safe learning environment through regular icebreakers and teambuilders.
